  1. Just thought I'd give an update about what's going on in midwest Iowa. I had to come a different way to work. The police closed the road two blocks from my house because of water on the road. It's still raining!! But maybe no rain for Friday and Saturday. Along the interstate road I took this morning to work, there was water everywhere. It was like a very large lake with tops of trees and a house or two dotted here and there.
And last night a tornado hit on the western side of Iowa at a Boy Scout Camp and killed four young people, injuring several others, and completely destroying the scout camp.

How are the rest of you managing with your weather?

  2. I have been keeping up and read about the tornado at the Boy Scout Camp earlier this morning. You guys are really having a rough time. Please stay safe as you can. ((hugs))

Our weather sucks as usual. Hot and humid.

  3. Prayers for those scouts and their families. LK, stay safe! No driving through any amount of water.

  5. I second those prayers for the families of the boy scouts. What a tragedy!

  6. I was very upset to hear about the Boy Scout tragedy. My boys were scouts and went on many camping trips, and I always feared something happening. My heart goes out to the parents.

  7. More news....200 homes in an area by a marina are being evacuated right now. The authorities have set up one of the schools as a shelter area. At work we are listening to news reports for the latest street closings and such.
What we have heard about the boy scouts is that there were 89 scouts there. Four died, 40 were injured, and all scouts have been reunited with their families.

  8. How terrible about the Boy Scout tragedy. I hope it stops raining soon and please be careful LK.

  9. LK...I'm so sorry to hear of all the devastation in Iowa! I'm heartbroken to hear of the Boy Scout Camp and the terrible loss of those innocent young lives. I'm keeping you all in my prayers that the horrible weather patterns will stop bringing so much pain and destruction to you. Just how much can one state take???? I'm happy you're safe for now but worry if the rains continue. Please keep us posted.

  10. It would be a wonderful thing if someone could figure out how to pipe water from flooded areas into drought-stricken locations.

  11. LadyKat - Thanks for the updates! I've been wondering how you've been faring. I was very upset when I read about the tragedy at the scout camp. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.

I am also worried about my cousin. She and her family were headed to Iowa this week for a memorial service for her husband, who passed away earlier this year. This service had been planned for months. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly where in Iowa she was going to be. I hope they are keeping safe!

  14. So far, I'm doing okay...thanks, everyone, for your good wishes and the prayers for the boy scouts and families. Now the authorities are saying that the Des Moines River should crest as soon as tomorrow night and about a foot lower than the 1993 flood. (Of course, that's if there's no more rain.)
The last alert we heard at work was for Cedar Rapids and officials there asking people in the flood areas to consider evacuating until the rivers crest there.
Rubia, I do hope your cousin and family are traveling to a safe area. Their worst problem may be just getting around the roads because so many are closed.
This morning at work we were talking about how to get our flood waters to the wildfire areas.

  15. LK, stay safe. It's so horrible what the weather is doing. I can only hope people are surviving and will be okay.

  17. Keep us posted LK. Sounds like a terrible situation. I just heard on the news that 55 out of 90 some counties in Iowa are affected.

  18. Another bit of information for this Friday morning...about 200 people showed up yesterday at a designated site to help fill sandbags. Traffic is very difficult since so many main roads are closed due to flooding. (It took me an hour to get home from work yesterday...usually a 25-minute drive.) Cedar Rapids is the worst of Iowa's cities. I just heard that 100 blocks of homes are under water. Of course, lots of farm fields are underwater, which means no crops...so this will effect people for some time. The local Animal Rescue League has offered to give shelter to animals belonging to the people displaced because of the flooding.

  19. The news was just showing Cedar Rapids downtown and how the area is flooded with what they are calling the 500 year flood, how terrible for the residents.

  20. I don't really see the news on television in the mornings, but I do read it on my phone instead. The picture they showed was just awful. Stay high and dry, LadyKat.

  21. LK..offer still stands to run for higher ground out here..California won't see rain for a while...Hope you stay safe! I pray for all those who have lost everything, may the rebuild bigger and better when the water is gone.

  22. LK thank you for the update. I hope the best for you

  23. Quick note: voluntary evacuation called for in downtown Des Moines. Several businesses are closing at different times to let people leave without clogging the roadways out of town at regular quitting time.
I'm leaving work at 4:00 and hoping everyone is already off the road before I head home. (Luckily, I don't work downtown, so I shouldn't have to deal with that traffic.) The Des Moines River and the Raccoon River should be cresting by tonight or tomorrow morning and start receding after that.

  24. Take care of yourself LK

  25. I'm hoping and praying that this all clears up real soon. My great-aunt and great-uncle live in Iowa, in Knoxville, and I have cousins scattered across the state as well.

  26. Prayers for all who live in this area--FEMA has finally decided to arrive today! They are calling it another Katrina, so much has been destroyed. These poor people probably don't even have flood insurance since it's not a prone area. It is suggested to just send money to the Red Cross for now to get as much help there as possible.

  27. Oh this is terrble! Please stay safe LK and everyone else!

Posted 1 year ago by Buttercup #

  28. I will definitely be sending money to the Red Cross. This is just horrible what's happening to these people. And Sheba's Mom is right - they probably DON'T have flood insurance. I pray that everybody there is ok and safe.

  29. I hope LadyKat is doing okay. I am very sorry for the people in the state of Iowa and for those downstream on the Mississippi River that may have flooding too. Prayers that things get better for them. Wish there was a way all that water could be sent to areas that really could use it.

Posted 1 year ago by SylvesterMiasMomma #

  30. Any news? LK how are you?
This is very frightening to read about,Des Moines is flooding.
    Prayers for them.
