Newly Diagnosed Diabetic 11 Year Old Male Kitty Needs Home

(33 posts)
  1. I was at the vet yesterday buying more flea meds (Advantage for the dog and Capstar pills for him and the cats) and someone had wanted their beautiful long-haired torti/white kitty put down due to not wanting to give him his shots every day. The vet asked if instead he and his staff take the cat and get his blood sugar stabilized and try to find him a good home. They agreed. The poor kitty is so sad and confused! You should see his sad little face! He will need insulin that will cost $30 a bottle and will last for about 3 months. Please, if there is anyone willing to give this poor guy a home, contact me at Catwoman 1737 at aol dot com and I'll give you the vet's name and number. I'm thinking that maybe a human with diabetes won't be squeamish about the shots and be sypathetic to his plight. I took a picture with my phone but it was blurry, and he kept looking away and down.

  2. I'll put the word out here in my neck of the swamps,Catwoman. Don't know if someone would be willing to transport him all that way, but it sure can't hurt to inquire folks, can it? God bless you for this,CW!
    Peace be with you.

  3. How did the vet resist the temptation to PUNCH the former owner?? Honestly, some people...if their child had developed diabetes, would they have them put down? Makes my blood boil.

I hope someone offers this poor little cat a decent loving home - please don't be put off by the idea of giving a cat insulin injections, Titch was diabetic and I was terrified at first, but it's so easy, and certainly NOT a reason not to have a diabetic cat.

  5. Wow, I am so glad to see that my post made it. The SECOND I clicked "send post", the power went off! I always have trouble rewriting something I have already written--if it's left my head it's gone forever! The power came back after about 20 seconds.

  6. The vet sounds like a very decent and kind man. I bet if he prints the poor kitty's sad story and posts the flyer in his office, one of his more reasonable clients would consider giving the poor little guy a home.

33 cents a day doesn't seem like an outrageous amount to spend on a cat. And shots aren't that hard to give. I hope the folks who gave up the cat don't go out and get another pet (unless it's a pet rock).

  7. I was over at Instinct and Intuition's dropping off the keyboard and mouse that I borrowed and while I was there, Instinct had to give one of their kitties a shot of insulin as she is newly diagnosed diabetic kitty. It was very easy. If I was nearby, I would make sure that people know that giving the cat a shot each day isn't a big deal.

As MCW said, how did the Vet resist from punching the owner in the face? Wow! I volunteer to punch the owner. That poor scared cat. Oh it just breaks my heart!

  8. How about a pet rock to the head? Sorry, I don't really mean that...it just makes me as mad as it does MCW too...

  9. CheetahBoysmom, the vet *does* have a flyer in the office...that is how I found out. :-) I told him I would get the word out to cat people all over the country!

  10. That's so sad.I can't stand when people do stuff like that. B*****ds!
Also health care workers probably wouldn't mind giving an animal a shot. I've given mine shots before. I wish I could give the poor confused baby a home but the Inn is kinda full right now.

  11. CW, you are so right !!! I am diabetic and take up to 3 shots per day, and I would NOT have a problem giving a kitty a shot...

  12. Here's an idea for finding the poor boy a new home:

When kids are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, they sometimes have a hard time accepting it. They tend to be angry and feel like they are the only person in the world with this unfair condition. Maybe some of the endocrinologists in your area would be willing to post the poor cat's flyer.

Having a cat with the same condition (especially since cats are usually so easy to give shots to), might be just exactly what a kid needs to help him/her realize life isn't over just because you're diabetic.

  14. I am praying that this poor little guy finds a home with loving parents who don't see him as a burden, but a family member. Darn, I'm crying again. Man, every post I read this morning has had me in tears.

  17. Catwoman, can you keep us posted? I have been able to think of hardly anything else all day. If I were allowed to have more than one cat, I would try so hard to get him up here. Don't know why his plight has touched me so much, I guess your description of his sadness and confusion, dang it, I'm crying again. I'm so tired of hearing people toss pets and babies away because they are too much trouble.

  18. If I was allowed more than two cats, I would try to help find a home for this poor baby. I too feel my heart breaking over these types of people who think animals can be throwaways. I sure would like to throw this person in to their worst nightmare of a situation!

  19. If someone keeps the cat I'm willing to pay for the transport... in exchange for a kitty pic...

  20. Morning PM, you are a nice person to offer to do that :) Its so sad that the orig owners couldn't take the responsibility of caring for their furbaby, whom I am sure gave them unconditional love.

  21. PM, thanks! I'm hoping to have some response now that the weekend is over. I'm going to try to get over there today and get a better picture.

  23. Once again, my faith in humans goes down the tubes (with the exception of our TDK people of course--we are special!)I hope this becomes an instance of "What goes around, comes around". Poor little guy!

  25. CB's remark gave me an idea. I wonder if any endocrinologists would like to have him as an office cat? The doctor(s) could let patients watch the cat getting his shots, and just having the cat around might be comforting to them. There was an article in the New England Journal of Medicine about a year or so ago about a cat who lived in a nursing home and provided companionship to patients during their final hours, so having a cat living in a medical setting and having contact with patients is something that has been done before.

    Just wondering.

  28. Hoping I can get over there tomorrow to get a picture of the boy. I received my DE on Monday afternoon, had to work today and will spend tomorrow spreading the DE and hopefully killing the last holdout of the Super Fleas that have lived through both Revolution and flea bombs. It seems like about 95% are dead, but that is no consolation when one jumps on your foot!
