I received this e-mail this morning. Very sad, but it's happening every day, to many millions each year. Spay/Neuter has to be the message shouted from the roof tops. Communities have to pass laws or something to make sure all pets are neutered. If the faces in this posting are used to move the stubborn or uneducated to become more responsible then it is worth the tears and heartache.

So sad, and such needless waste of beautiful lives :(

That's very very sad. I had to hug my kitty extra close when I opened it (even though I tried not to open it). My Huddy now has tears in his fur. (yes he's at the office with me today).
That's such a waste.

Oh my God. This made me cry like a baby. Fortunately situation here in Finland is a little better because
a) people do spay and neuter a lot :) - at least in the cities and
b) we don't have true ferals. Abandoned pets usually die during the first winter outside; winters are so harsh on them. :'( -
EVERYONE should see websites like this.
Having FACES to the statistics is the only way it's going to hit home. Every cat lover and dog lover should see some resemblance to a friendly, furry face they've known and loved.
I'm convinced there's no other way to help people understand and DO SOMETHING about the dog and cat overpopulation problem, than to have it hit uncomfortably close to home.

I agree 100% anncetera. After the tears must come the action to change the status quo.

Man I can't believe pet owners could be so cruel or ignorant to the fact of what happens to pet sthat are not fixed or surrendered for what ever reason. All those furrbabies lost, without a chance to know the love of a home and companion. So many kittens and puppies, tore my heart apart.
I think maybe schools should add this to there curriculium, to hopefully have some responsible future pet owners.

Ange, that is going to be my project here in this area. Want to put together a program for schools, scouts and any oranizations where youth are involved. Not much we can do about their dumb parents on the spay/neuter issue, but if we can reach the kids now maybe they will grow up to help stop the terrible waste of precious life. They may even convince some of the parents to S/N.
I know Kate the Grate did some programs in her area. Not sure if it is ongoing.

I think one of the reasons people dont S/N is the cost. Some places charge as much as $400 for a Spay (My old vet) Had to go find a new one, $260. I truly believe that if it cost under $100, I think more people would. I know people say "If you cant afford the vet bills, don't get the animal" But sometimes (Often) they just show up and people keep them, and then they breed.
Some cities have discount spay/neuter clinics (we do in Denver $10) but it is not really well advertised. But I am gonna print out some flyers and put them around. Least I can do to help. -
I just bawled my eyes out over this link. I agree with anncetera2. I think every should see this. It really breaks my heart to think that all those animals died because of HUMAN irresponsiblity and ignorance.
I would adopt every cat/kitten dog/puppy on "death row" if I could.
I like the idea about getting this added to the school schedule a lot, Ange. This would get the word out and help to mold our children into responsible pet owners.Posted 4 years ago by Cathi in NC #

MerD, you are right about the cost factor for some of the very poorest people. If more communities opened low/no cost clinics just for the S/N and basic shots much would improve. Trying to move the local governments toward this is difficult at best, I know because we have been trying in York County. It is actually less expensive to S/N than to house and euthanize the castaways.
We have to convince the people who want to see kittens born, or see the cuteness of wee ones, that they can foster a pregnant female and do a good deed as well as enjoying the babies. We need to convince those who think it cruel to deny the animal the fun of copulation that the pets will be happier and healthier without.
So many issues to deal with - I get bogged under some days. Need to concentrate on what I can physically and mentally handle to travel this path of trying to reduce the suffering of these wonderful sweet creatures.

I couldn't even make it a quarter of the way through.
Even though I am a breeder, I get on my soap box every chance I can to spay/neuter.
It breaks my heart.Posted 4 years ago by artistabobbi TX 1/17 #

When I first started getting all of my cats spayed(a few years ago), my vet only charged $60 but in the last year or so it went up to $80, because their meds for it went up. He was forced to pass on the costs to his patients. Rabies shot is only $7. My vet has the lowest prices around for any of their services. I know, I checked around. He is a kind person who has cats of his own. My vet doesn't mind if you want to stick around and help with your pet, matter of fact he appreciates it. I wish I could find a people doctor who is that concerned about his patients!

Elene_yorkpa. Wise choice and I hope it works for you. I still can't believe adults are so dumb or just penny-pinchers. You'd think they'd look at the long run, no puppy/kitten food 2/3times a year, ad costs to aznnounce avaiable pets, no having to find homes. Long run $80 now will save you hundreds later.
Duh! Right?

Miu, until recently, there were no low-cost alternatives to visiting your vet for spay-neuter services. I think most charged whatever the market would bear.
However, there's now a low-cost spay-neuter group in Kansas City that will perform alteration ($25), rabies shot ($5) & distemper shot ($5). Might be even less for ferals, just because they know ferals are even tougher to get anyone to care about or take responsibility for.
The group Spay & Neuter KC is where I got Mama Kitty and all 3 of her kittens altered & shots. It's where Pretty Girl and her kittens will be altered, too. I help out in cat recovery on high-volume clinic days.
