  1. I have a new kitten I just adopted from the spca, and she's been throwing up since yesterday. It's not constant, she just goes to her kitten box and throws up, it's happened three times in the last 2 days. She's also had a little diarrhea. She has also consumed a lot of dairy for a little kitten. She got into my chip dip and ate a fair amount, and before that I gave her a very small amount of icecream.

Oh yes, and she's 6 1/2 weeks old and hasn't had her first vaccination yet. I think it's just she's eaten too much dairy, and her little system's not used to it, but I need to be sure. Other than that she's a very healthy Happy little kitty.

  2. Hi, kokee. You're right about the dairy products. Cats don't have the enzyme in their stomachs that's needed to digest milk, so it makes most of them sick. It usually gives them diarrhea. She should not have any dairy products at all. I know that sounds strange considering how much people hear about cats liking milk, but most cats can't handle it at all.

What does she usually eat? How is she acting otherwise?

  3. She's on solid, hard food (Whiska's Kitten Formula) and she's otherwise fine, she's not acting sick, just meows, throws up and carries on as normal. She's eating perfectly aswell.

  4. Was there any onion in the dip? That may have caused the problem too.

  5. Then it probably was just the milk that upset her stomach. It should settle down soon. Just make sure she's drinking plenty of water, and if she throws up any more after the dairy products have left her system, it would be a good idea to call a vet for advice.

  6. Is it possible she has worms? I just checked her vomit(surprisingly - didn't gross me out lol) , and it's just food she's throwing up.

  7. I don't know, kokee. I haven't had any experience with a kitten that young, so I don't know if they would have wormed her at the shelter or not. Shelters are not supposed to place kittens for adoption unless they are healthy, and those who are old enough get their shots along with worming and flea treatment. I think that a kitten would have to be very heavily infested with worms for it to cause vomiting. Usually worms show up in their poop. They can also show up under the tail as little white specks that look like seeds or grains of rice.

When will the kitten be making her first trip to the vet?

  8. Did the vomit smell sour, like baby spit up?

  9. 6.5 weeks is a little young to be fully weened. Back-up to KMR and wet kitten food instead of kibble. Offer plenty of water as well. Check with your ASPCA for what pre-adoption vetrinary care the kitten received. And get baby to the vet for a first evaluation.

Worms are always possible in kittens that were stray or feral births (heck even home bodies can pass worms to the kits). However, short of a description of the critters found in a stool (large grains of rice that wiggle) that is something we can't even begin to guess over the internet.

  10. The Vomit doesn't smell sour, and I checked her poo and it's worm free. The Shelter gave her Capstar, and she is fully weened - Her mothter wasn't at the Shelter. I did change her food though - the Spca was giving her Kitten Chow, and I bought Whiskas Kitten - should I switch back, because at the shelter, she was totally healthy.

  11. I've seen suggestions that if you do switch food, do some mixing of the old and the new gradually building up to all new.

  12. How long have you had her, kokee? Was she throwing up at all after you brought her home and before she got into the dairy stuff?

Posted 3 years ago by Leeny #

  13. I got her on the 18th and she wasn't throwing up before the Dairy

  14. I feel like it probably was the dairy that caused her problems. If she was eating Whiskas for 4-5 days and it didn't bother her, I don't think that would be the problem.

When does she go for her first trip to the vet? Also, what is Capstar?

  15. I called today and the receptionist said it would be best to wait until seven weeks, so they penciled her in for Monday.

    Posted 3 years ago by kokee92 #

  16. That's good. The vet will give her a good check and make sure that everything's okay.

  17. Thanks for all the help. I'm not nearly has panicked as I was before.

  18. That's what we're here for, kokee. Welcome to TDK, and feel free to post anytime with questions, concerns, or just chat. Let us know how your kitten is doing as she grows up. Also, don't hesitate to call the vet if something concerns you before Monday.

  19. Hi Kokee, did the dip have any onion in it? It's really important.

Posted 3 years ago by Buttercup #

  20. It might have, it was a Philadelphia Dill Pickle Dip why?

    Posted 3 years ago by kokee92 #

  21. If she didn't eat much she'll be OK,but onions can cause a type of anemia in cats. It might be safer to take her to the vet if she keeps having problems.

  22. Here is a ASPCA Poison control hotline (888) 4ANI-HELP or (888) 426-4435 that might be good to call. I don't know how much it takes. I've had cats eat lasgana before that had garlic and onions and they were OK.
It just might be a good idea to call if you can or take her to see the vet in the morning if possible.

  24. Kokee it's probably just stomach irritation from the dairy,I just posted that other information so you would have it if needed.
Please keep us informed about how you and baby are doing. I didn't mean to scare you. Kittens get upset tummies easily.

  26. Hiya Hi, kokkee92! Welcome to TDK. I agree with ailuromaniac actually. Feeding wet food is definitely much better for such a young kitten. And of course, refrain from feeding dairy product as many cats are lactose intolerant. Throwing up is definitely not a good sign so you might want a vet to look into it. So, do keep up posted and try to keep human food away from the little curious kitty.

  29. Ooooooooooohhh!! She is a beauty!! My kits sent her a friends invite on Catster. You will receive an e-mail from Catster with the invitation. Click on "Accept" if you want to accept the invitation or delete the e-mail if you don't want to. If you accept an invitation the photo of the kit that invited you will appear on Bizzy's page and her photo will show up on the other kit's page. It's fun.

It worked! Your screen name is pink! Good job. :)
