My daughter thoughtlessly tossed our 2 lb. rescued kitten up in the air. Should I be worried about brain injury?
I'm so upset with her. She should've really, really known better.
Thanks,
Elaine
How old is your daughter? And why on earth would anyone toss a small kitten up in the air? Does the kitten act like it is injured in any way?

If the kitten shows any signs of disorientation, get the little one to a vet, so please watch carefully. And please sit your daughter down and talk to her, that is way too old to be that thoughtless with another living being....sorry to be so harsh sounding, I know thats hard to hear from someone else. If she doesn't want to listen to you, then please consider finding another home for the kitten for its own sake. Again sorry if thats harsh to hear, just worried about the kitten's health and welfare.

HI and welcome to tdk, this is going to be confusing 'cause my name's elaine too.As for the kitten get to a vet asap, kittens are more fragile than human
babies and everyone knows that you don't throw a baby up in the air.Kittens
have such small brains and are very easliy hurt.

Keep an eye on the kitten. If there was any serious damage, it should emerge soon.
I am sure the girl meant no harm, and this is a good time to discuss the fragility of life with her. This can be a great learning session for your daughter to help her understand that God gives us stewardship here on earth, and we are under orders to treat young things very tenderly and all things lovingly.
Please tell her that given some more time this little kitten will grow to be her best four-footed friend, and you have to treat friends very gently, or they go away.
By the way, you sound like a really good mother and pet person. You are on top of things and concerned in a strong and loving manner, and you took steps immediately to get things right. Welcome to TDK!
Emma you are the voice of reason, thank you for putting in a better way than I did.

I would watch her a bit but if any doubts, please take her to a vet.

It's been about 2 hours and kitten seems fine. We are still keeping an extremely close eye on her. Any sign of anything being 'off', we'll be off to the vet.
This is a huge learning lesson for my daughter. One that's she's taking very seriously. I don't understand what was going thru her head. She's been around rescues since she was born. She's handled baby bunnies, kittens, puppies, parakeets, parrots... I would've thought that this lesson would've been far behind her, but I guess not. She's never done anything remotely like this before and I would hope that this lesson wouldn't ever have to be repeated.
It is also a lesson for my younger daughter. She came in and told me, which I thanked her for and she's learning that when someone does something that you feel isn't right; stand up, say something and/or go get help. Hopefully this will be the end of the drama for today.
Elaine
Hi Elaine, what a worrying couple of hours you must have had. I'm glad the kitten seems OK, you seem to be handling the daughter thing extremely well. Welcome to TDK, sorry it was a traumatic introduction - hope to see more of you on the site, and in happier circumstances.

Good morning! Kitten is absolutely fine. Kids seem wiser! lol -- My nerves were shot by the end of the night last night. The kids have the kitten chasing one of those fishing poles and she seems to be having no problem. She doesn't even seem to be holding a grudge against the kids -- me, hmmm....
Thanks so much for everyone's input. I literally rescued this kitten last Friday from a very busy 55-mph highway, curled up against the concrete barrier with cars and trucks whizzing by. She went to the vet on Monday and was surprisingly healthy.
I think that the kitten (now Bella) has used up a couple of her lives and almost gave me a heart attack twice now!
Thanks for everyone's concern and help.
Elaine
Elaine, I'm very glad to hear that Bella appears to be okay.
I truly hope your 12 year old is learning from this, and that the lesson isn't just that it's unpleasant to get caught doing something wrong.
I wonder how she would have felt if she was tossed a hundred feet up in the air by some 50 foot tall cat... would she have been so lucky as to land uninjured?
(I mention this because putting oneself in another's shoes can be an effective way to encourage empathy.)

You might want to introduce Bella and your 12-year-old to the TDK Roller Rink, a virtual skate date for the kitties. The next one opens this Friday evening, and your daughter might get really hooked on your Baby Bella and various interactions with others in the cyber-rink.
Please do come to the party!
