If you were Jim Qwilleran...

(10 posts)
  1. For those who aren't familiar with Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who..." series of mystery novels, Jim Qwilleran is a journalist and guardian of two Siamese cats who inherited several billion dollars (he's not sure how much) from a friend of his late mother. Not one to pursue an extravagant lifestyle, Qwill (as he is known) established a charitable foundation to meet needs and support worthy causes.

We've heard much news lately about cats needing homes, medical help, or both. If you had Qwill's resources with which to help cats, what would you do?

  2. I would search out all the shelters around the world and replace the euthanasia methods in the ones that are still using gas chambers...Sorry if that doesn't sound romantic or fluffy...but apparently this method is still alive and well in too many areas and it's the cruelest method of euthanizing known to man. :) *in my opinion* OR....I'd buy a large island and turn it into something like Cats on The Kings (?)I think that's the name of the animal sanctuary/adoption shelter I recently read about.

  6. I would set up a foundation that would continue to generate money for the rescue of homeless cats, medical care for cats whose owners might have trouble affording it, free neutering for ferals, and research on feline nutrition, illness, etc. Then, because the foundation would generate so much money :-), I would recruit local branches so that there would be at least one branch accessible to anyone in urban areas, and at least one branch per state (four for Texas!) to handle rural needs.

I would also initiate a huge public awareness problem on the need for neutering, good nutrition and need to treat feline disease. And, most importantly, I would produce heart tugging movies (Hallmark, maybe?) that would have wide exposure, that would follow kitties who are on the street and have been dumped. And I would make it required viewing in every elementary school (because if you can invest a kid, you have got them for life).

Then, I would go and have a cup of tea with Polly. (except didn't she move to France?)

  7. Yes, and under circumstances that made no sense whatsoever. I think the book planned for this year, "Smelled Smoke," is really going to be the end of the line. I preordered it from Amazon. Remember how they were releasing a new one every January (which is a ridiculous publication schedule, and an inhumane one for a woman in her 90s)? "Smoke" was supposed to be released in April, then there was going to be a delay until June, now June is almost over and I haven't heard anything.

I could go on and on about the way Putnam has treated Braun and her work, but I won't. Let's get back to thinking how we'll invest our billions for the benefit of kitties...

  8. I agree with W&W...I would love to do those things. Polly moved!? I haven't read the last two yet. My reading time has fallen off during the last couple of years. I get my copies through the Mystery Guild Book Club. I haven't heard anything from them on the newest book.
Back to spending billions...I would also make sure that the money was invested well to keep all the shelters and such open because we all know that loving and protecting and caring for cats and kittens (or all animals) is not a money-making venture.

  9. You know, the Polly moving plot just does not make any sense....

  10. LK and WWM, nothing in the last book made sense. I'm an editor, and I know that my job is to take the manuscript given me, whatever condition it's in, and make something good out of it. Putnam has not done that for Braun. Their neglect of her work ranges from publication of books with illogical plots or no plot at all to printing of glaringly misspelled words. My take on the situation is that they're trying to get as much money out of her and her work as possible before she becomes completely incapable of writing--and I think that point has been reached. She didn't deserve this.
