  1. Buenas tardes,
I've just had a terrible moment. I couldn't find Pipa anywhere. She wasn't in any room and I frantically searched and searched. Opened windows and called and called untill I had tears in my eyes. You see it is very hot lately and I let the cats out to a little terrace I have at home, it has high walls and it is (I thought) impossible for the cats to get out. So the lay there and play around loving every minute. So I had a terrible feeling she had figured out how to escape.
I called and called till nearly all the neighbours had their head outside... it seemed like hours till I suddenly see her on the neighbours wall, I have no idea how she was able to do that. I ran to the neighbour's house and begged her to let me in and get Pipa. I picked her in my arms and took her home. when she got home she got very nervous and scratched me!!!! I have a deep scratch on my ear that probably needs stitches. She rushed home and lied down... Now she is sort of limp, lying down all the time and I'm lost to what to do! My ear is bleeding and all I can think is why did she scratch me? i have never EVER been scratched that way by my babies and now she is all limp on the floor.

Please, you all help everybody... I at a loss of what to do... I feel terrible.

  2. get her to the vet and yourself to the Dr.

  3. Oh, honey, take some deep breaths. If this just happened, Pipa was scared out of her mind, and your ear got between her and home. Check and see if she has been injured in any way. If she has been out for over an hour or two, you should see a vet to check her over. See if you can get your ear to stop bleeding, and put some ointment on it after washing and swabbing if the slash is not too deep. Most injuries to extremities bleed horribly but are superficial and just require cleaning and a bandaid.

If it is very hot there right now, she may be suffering from some dehydration. Try to get some fluids in her.

And please don't worry. So many indoor cats do a "run outside and have fun" that turns into "I want to go home Home HOME!" and by the time they get back to their frantic owners, the cats are in much better shape than the humans who love them.

Please keep us updated about this, dear.

  4. Take Pipa to the Vet ASAP. If she is limp on the floor like that she may have eaten something that made her sick or worse. Please don't wait, do it now. Better safe than sorry. You have all my prayers that all will be ok.

  5. Pipa's mum is it possible that she could have gotten into something poisonous out side?? I would call the vet & see what they think. Please keep us posted.

  6. What a scare Pipa gave you!! Thank goodness you found her!

Please, please get your ear attended to immediately. You don't want to neglect an injury like that.

I'm sure Pipa is fine. She probably saw a handsome kitty from the neighborhood and went to investigate. She clearly figured out an escape route so it might be best to keep her indoors. I don't know why she scratched you. Maybe she wasn't ready to come home yet. I'm sure she didn't mean to hurt you.

  7. PM, she probably was overheated and disoriented from being in a place that was unfamiliar. Sometimes cats get nervous when held so high up too. My Dad got horribly scratched once by our cat--my Dad was walking around the yard with the cat on his shoulder and a dog ran by...the cat clawed his whole head trying to figure out what to do. Don't take it as an assault against you personally. You might not need stitches--ears bleed profusely, just clean it off and put some antibiotic gel on it and then see if it needs attention. Just let Pipa lie on the floor but make sure she has water nearby in case she is overheated. Is Javier home to help you?

Posted 3 years ago by Catwoman #

  8. PM--she probably sensed that you were upset and that made her nervous, hence the scratch. I'm sure she didn't do it intentionally. How long was she out there? If it was for a long period of time, she might just be overly tired and glad to be back home---she may need extra time to 'sleep it off'. I'd give her some time and then check to see how she's doing. Make sure that you put some antibiotic ointment on your ear so it doesn't get infected. Cat scratches are SOOOOOOO painful! Get to the doctor's immediately if you think you need stitches. Sorry that she scared you, but she was probably scared herself!

I'd also wait to see a doctor until your ear stops bleeding. Your ear will bleed profusely even if it's a tiny scratch because it's mostly cartilage.

  9. I hadn't thought of poisonous plants until reading everyone else's comments. Does your neighbor have any plants along the wall where Pipa was?

Posted 3 years ago by Catwoman #

  10. she may have been poisend, hurry.

  13. I'm just crying like a baby... I was scared that's all... She is cleaning herself on the floor, looks OK... I think we both got a big scare.

    Thank you guys...

  14. Ohhhh..I hope Pipa is ok...You have me so worried. Could Pipa be suffering from heat stroke? Please take her to the vet or give him a call. I agree that the ear area will probably bleed far worse than the injury actually is but you could be right about the stitches. Please see to Pipa as I'm afraid of the seriousness of heat stroke in animals. :(

  15. Bobby tries to scratch me sometimes when I pick him up outside to take him in. Sometimes it's because he doesn't want to go, but mostly it's because something scares him and he panics. Sometimes it's a scary duck, sometimes a car driving by, a neighbor moving his lawn, Mama being a klutz and tripping over stuff etc. Anyway, maybe Pipa got scared by something and panicked?

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  16. Sounds like CW and Emma know what to do. I personally would watch her for a little bit. Offer her fresh cool water and see if she drinks it. If she continues to be lethargic, I would take her to the vet. Put some form of hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and dab at your ear and then some form of antibiotic ointment such as neosporine. If Javier is available, have him look at your ear and let you know if you need stitches.

I am so sorry for your ordeal. Something must have scared her when you got her home for her to scratch you. When Sylvester went on his "walkabout" for seven hours, I was frantic and very upset. Thankfully he came home when he was hungry.

  17. Oh Marina...you sound better...Maybe you both just paniced a bit. Now see to your wound please as long as Pipa seems fine. :) Please keep us posted hon.

  18. Just looked... the neighbour has tomatoe plants are they poisonous? She was out for abou an hor and a bit...

Posted 3 years ago by PipasMumSpain #

  19. I'm glad Pipa is OK. Cleaning herself is a good way to settle herself down after her big adventure. It must have surprised her to see how big the world outside is!!

Try to catch your breath and gather your thoughts. If you are calm, that will calm her too. No need to panic unless you see some signs of actual illness, dear heart. You did a wonderful job of finding her and bringing her home safely--even though it appeared that she didn't appreciate it!! :D

  20. PM, our heads and ears are so vascular and bleed like the very dickens. But rarely would a scratch like that require sutures. Wash your ear really well where Pipa (accidentally) scratched you. If it's still bleeding, take a washcloth or something, and put pressure on the scratch. Once it has stopped bleeding, apply some antibiotic ointment, if you have any. Like neosporin. I'm not sure what names they would be in Spain.

I had a meezer scratch my hand to bits years ago when he got outside and was frightened by a dog. I picked him up when he was in a panic and he let me have it, but he was scared. Pipa was frightened, too, I'll bet. She was out of her house and I'm sure was scared. I'll bet she feels really bad :-( that she hurt you.

  21. Hi PM,I don't believe tomato plants are poisonous,they're not on this list;
    http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/Poisonous_Plants.htm
It sounds like Pipa got out,had a scare and tired himself out.
    How is your ear?

  22. Tomato plants are toxic to cats...but are you sure she ate some? I have tomato plants and my cats never touch them.

  23. I found this on the web:

Tomatoes and tomato plants: Tomatoes of all kinds are toxic to cats, as are parts of the tomato plant. Ingesting as little as a cherry tomato can cause severe gastrointestinal upset

Posted 3 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  24. Tomatoes are not listed as poisonous, Marina, on one website I checked. I'll keep looking.

Yes, the green fruit, stem and leaves can be toxic to cats. If she is not acting ill, she probably hasn't eaten anything toxic. To reassure yourself, call your vet for advice.

Must be conflicting information out there. Why do they do that when we get so easily confused???

Posted 3 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  26. She's eating, that has to mean she's OK...

Wow, was that an ordeal! I'm sorry for all the drama... been a difficult couple of hours... seemed like years... I'm noy usually so emotional...

Hugs to you all wonderful people... I felt a huge TDK hug and it calmed me.

Got a towel on my ear... the gash is deep but I guess I'll live!
    Thank you all again

  27. WWM, we both must have googled the same thing! Great minds think alike!
    :-)
I'm sure Pipa is fine. I have tomato plants every year and they have never been a problem with any of my cats.

Posted 3 years ago by Catwoman #

  28. That's strange, CW, about tomatoes, I didn't find them on other lists I just looked at. I had a cat who LOVED tomatoes - more than once in an unguarded moment she snatched pieces off my pizza and ate them. Never got sick from it, either.

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  29. Pobrecitas Marina y Pipa!

Chances are, Pipa just got scared. Bear got a horrendous scratch on his cheek last winter while he was sick and sleeping (as he usually does) holding tight to Baby Sally Semi-Meezer. She, for some reason, likes sleeping in his death-grip, but did not appreciate my turning on the blow-dryer while they were both in blissful slumber; hence the cheek-slash.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to take precautions against dehydration, especially if summer's been unseasonably hot. I don't know about tomato plants, sorry. All I know about plants is if I own them, they die.

As for your ear, have Javier apply Neosporin or some other triple antibiotic ointment to the wound and keep it covered. See a doc if you need to, but in the States, all animal-induced wounds are reported to Animal Control-it's the law, even if the animal is not at fault. Somehow, I don't think that would be the case in Spain, but you never know.

  30. PM, we completely understand your feeling frantic about Pipa. That was a huge ordeal for you and we are here for you. Sending you calming thoughts, a big piece of chocolate (or whatever calms you) and a huge hug. Treats to Pipa too.
