  4. She discovered that chasing things that move under the covers is fun. I must have moved my hand to the pillow, because that's where she landed. I remember thinking "ouch, my eye" and saw blood. Reluctantly got up, determined it was just a scratch and a trip to the emergency room wasn't necessary, and went back to bed. She must have gotten just the right spot, and considering how sensitive the tissue around eyes is, I woke up to quite a shiner!
That was her sixth night with us.
Yesterday, I spotted a little field mouse in my bathroom closet, on the stairs that lead to the attic. I had left the attic door open and have been up there moving stuff around, so I guess the critter decided to take a field trip. Bummer, I thought, Shaddo and Jiggs would have been too old to catch this or even be interested, and Leela is too young - or is she? I had a plastic box ready for when it ventured out from under the entertainment center where I spotted it later, and it kept sticking its nose out and suddenly Leela saw it and instinct kicked in. When it came far enough out, I dropped the box on it, trapping it. Leela chased the little guy around the box for quite a while from the outside. Nice that the box was clear so she could see it. The mouse was just a baby itself; it was cute watching a baby play with a baby. Eventually, daddy slipped cardboard under the box and escorted the mouse to our woodpile in the back of our yard.
Leela is only 3 months old; what a pleasant surprise to see her mousing skills at such a young age. As for beating up mama, well, I'll live!
I think I'll wander down to the lake and catch a fish for her to play with next...

  8. Leela sounds like a sharp little hunter! I'll bet she'll be keeping her eye on that entertainment center for awhile after this most encouraging episode! Hah! I'm sorry about your eye...at that age they are just so motivated by the least little thing and really strike like lightening. Shaddo & Jiggs definitely would have been proud of little Leela!

  9. By the way, Leela gets her name from an animated show called "Futurama". Leela, one of the main characters, is a one-eyed alien living on Earth in the year 3000. She looks like a regular human woman, except she has one eye and has purple hair. Was my kitten trying to make me into her namesake, LOL?! If she tries it again (ok, it was probably an accident), I'm dying her fur bright purple!

  10. I wondered about that Joan! Now you need to get a Bender, a Frye, and an Amy! Not sure about a Dr Zoiberg tho ;) What a cutie Leela is!! How is your hubby doing with her? You're right, Shaddo and Jiggs would be proud of YOU for giving this little one a home {{HUGS}}

  11. Good girl, Leela, for the mouse!! For the other... not so good.

Joan, apply ice and have a martini....

  12. Yeah, if the next kitty is a boy, we're naming him Frye!

Linda, she loves her daddy and the feeling is mutual!

  13. Hahah! Joan I've seen that Futurama Character! How funny...Leela would be quite lovely sporting the color purple!

  14. I'm glad to hear that Joan...I know Shaddo was daddy's boy...Yeah for Leela!

And isn't a black eye sometimes called a mouse?! Works on both levels :P

  15. I was going to title this thread "the mouse and the mouse"!

  16. Perhaps you should have Leela sign a confession ;)

I can see the skeptical reponses to that story around the break table now complete with the back handed suggestions as to why you shouldn't stay with an abuser.

"Where did you get that shiner?"

"My kitten gave it to me."

"Ye...un..huh!. Say have you ever talked to a counseler.....?"...

"No, really it was the cat."

"Honey, I think you are in denial."

    :} heh.heh.heh!

  17. Joan, that's absolutely perfect! Both Leela giving you the black eye (however unintentional), and showing such an avid interest in mousing. Actually, her development's just about perfect; if she were a wild little outdoor thing, she'd be learning about hunting from her kitty mama.

  18. Poor Joan! And good/bad Leela! Purrhaps you can teach her boxing...
