"I live in rural southern Iowa and have moved into a home that the former owner fed strays. The cats like coming back because they like to sit on our deck that goes around the house. I felt bad for them over the winter and fed them and gave them a shelter but they are overwhelming me. I am on a limited income now and I cant even afford to feed myself, let alone these cats. Also I know they are not in the best of health. I tried calling some shelters in Des Moines, (about 2.5 hours from here) but they were not much help. They told me they would accept them if I could bring them to them but I have no way to do that. There is only two that I can hold, the rest are too scared to even get close. They will all gather around when I put some food out but to trap them I would definitely need some help. Some of them seem like they could make good pets tho if you could catch them and work with them to gain their trust. I also have two pregnant females atm and one I think that will be soon.

If anyone lives in Southern Iowa and would like a cat please contact me and we can arrange for you to try to catch one, if you can! The feral ones are mostly long haired cats. Every "local" place I've called said they were over crowded or said they would get back with me but they havent. I'm really at a loss as to what to do. People have told me to just not feed them and they will go away but I cant stand to have them at my door crying when all they have ever known is someone feeding them. The two that I can pet, one is a female approx 2 years old? and the other is a male about 1 year old. The male also arrived with only one eye. Also they have been causing me problems by trying to tear down my skirting to get under my mobile home to get to the heating vents in the winter.. its has been really hard to keep them out. If anyone knows of any shelter that will take them and not kill them, please let me know."

  2. This breaks my heart. I wish there was at least a TNR in her area. I wish I could help but don't know anyone in Iowa. Prayers that there is someone who can help this person with the colony that she lovingly inherited.

  4. I also wish I could help...Iowa is so far away. All I can recommend is try & contact any or all TNR groups. Because I don't have the resourses or money to travel,I relied on the computer to check with these rescue groups. The wonderful people on TDK helped in a HUGE way as well to connect me with people who could & DID help me. Try Alleycat Allies or Best Friends.

Others here with better computer skills can help you with links to these organizations.

I live in California & was so overwhelmed with emotion when one rescue group all the way in Oregon contacted me,wanting to help in any way they could.

I wish the best of Luck & Prayers that you find some help soon before the females start producing kittens over & over.

  5. I believe any advice we give to this person should be posted on the chat board in the link above, otherwise they won't see anything we say here on TDK. :) I understand where that lady is coming from... I once lived on a piece of land 7 miles out of town where a one-time ASPCA officer lived and there were about 27 cats on the land. When she divorced and moved I was there alone without means of feeding them and it worked my nerves constantly as I attempted to take this woman's place. When I had to move (because they sold the property) I was haunted by what would happen to those beautiful, mostly (but not all) feral creatures. Life can be soooooooo heartwrenching at times!! I still think about those cats of long ago....
