Henry... out the window

(36 posts)
  1. That's right... my little boy decided it would be a good idea to claw through the screen on our bedroom window, and then fell. From 5 stories up.

My morning started with a shock when I couldn't find him anywhere in the apartment. I turned everything upside down looking for him, and then looked out the window with tears in my eyes. I couldn't see him, so I ran downstairs and searched the perimeter of our building. Under cars, in bushes, hoping he had been okay enough to limp somewhere and hide. I couldn't find him anywhere. I called my boyfriend in tears, who jumped on the first bus (he was visiting his parents).

With a heavy heart I checked craigslist... and lo and behold. Somebody had a posting for "Found! Grey and white kitten at Church and Wellesley!" That was my intersection!

We met the girl and she handed him off to us. She was shocked to hear that he had fallen out of a window... she hadn't thought he was very badly injured. She said he even moved around her apartment a little bit.

Needless to say, we took him straight to the vet in case of internal trauma, but there was no damage. It looks like our little buddy took a 5 story drop with nothing but a sprained leg.

We're picking him up from the vet in an hour. (He's sleeping off some of the pain meds they gave him so that they could stretch him out to take an xray)

I am so relieved to know that he is safe. I don't know what I would have done if the outcome had been any different! My poor little kit :(

  2. Goodness! I'm glad he's OK! Maybe open the windows just a crack from now on?

  3. Skirty, I am so glad to know that Henry will be okay. I can only imagine how frightened you must have been. And how wonderful that someone took the time to place a "found" notice.

    Henry, never do that again!!

  4. Well, one would think that the screens would have been okay. But there will be no window opening from now on, believe you me.

  5. OMG..what a harrowing experience Skirty! I had a cat who fell from a second floor balcony once and it scared to petooties out of me. Of course he was fine...but 5 STORIES!!! Wow...Henry must be Super-Kitty!!! Poor thing must have been scared spitless! Was this maybe brought on be him panicing over loud fireworks last night??? I can't imagine why he wanted to push through that screen unless he was very frightened by something. I'm so happy that he wasn't seriously hurt! I do think Henry used up one of his 9 lives on this one!!!! :)

  6. I can't figure it out either! He always loved to sit on our windowsills. he must have thought it was a good idea to see what else was out there. Maybe a pidgeon was sitting there or something. There were some fireworks earlier in the evening, but nothing major since for us in Canada our version of independence day was on Tuesday.

I just hope that once he gets his health back he's my same little furball. Not that I'd love him any less if he wasn't.

  7. I'm sure Henry will be fine. Luckily he doesn't know how serious that fall could have been. Since we do...we're thinking there must be more than the injured leg. So glad this woman put up a notice on craigslist. I didn't know people used craigslist as a lost and found. I thought it was for listing items for sale??

  8. Gosh I'm glad Henry is alright, cat's don't have very good depth perception, they will jump at a butterfly, etc even though they're very high up. I'm glad you're not going to open that window much. I had a kitty jump/fall off my second story balcony once. I had just gotten up after working the night shift and was on the phone in my jammies and I looked over and he wasn't there. My balcony was over a busy parking lot that people drove too fast on. I threw some regular clothes on and dashed out and he was there waiting under a car with a broken front tooth. That scared the dickens out of me and I'm sure, him.

  10. OMG, thank goodness Henry is alright AND you found him. Thank god someone took the time to put a notice out there and you saw it!!! Poor baby. Give him some scritches for me. I am so glad you got Henry back, safe and sound.

  11. Awwww, poor Henry! My Bob scratched my screen, too. He always wants to get out. He'd managed to make some big tears in it, so now I only keep the window upen when I'm in the room, never when I'm not. It's just a matter of time before he'd go right through the screen.
I'm so happy little henry is okay! Hugs to Henry!

  13. Hey guys, thanks for all the love and scritches!

Just a little update: Henry is safe and sound home from the vet with us. Just like we suspected, nothing is broken, his leg is just mighty sore. He's being a big purrball - just happy to be home and in the company of loved ones I think.

I'll give you more updates once he starts running around again!
    headbutts!

  16. PHEWWWWW! I am so happy he survived with minimal injuries. That must have been an awful experience for Henry and you, skirty. Give him scritches, tummy rubs and headbonks from me and tell him NEVER do that again. :)

  17. I had to check the end of your story before I could read the whole thing. I'm so glad your baby is OK, skirty.

  18. UPDATE:

So, Henry did pretty good through the night. I slept with him on the floor so he wouldn't want to get up and move around too much. The vet told us to keep an eye on him tonight, because they thought that it might be a hairline fracture that the xray couldn't catch, and that if he was doing better and better that we shouldn't worry about it and cancel our apointment for today.

I'm glad he's doing better, because frankly I couldn't afford any more xrays, and the surgery it costs to fix a broken leg is... well, let's just say my only option would be to surrender him to the humane society, so they could fix him, but that means I could never adopt him back.

So Henry is looking better... let's all keep our fingers crossed that he continues on the road to recovery and his mommy doesn't have to give him up.

  20. Prayers for Henry. It is a good thing cats have 9 lives. You must have been so scared Skirty. Glad he is on the mend ...

  21. UPDATE AGAIN!:

Henry woke up and moved around a bit! Were not encouraging him to move too much, but yesterday he wouldnt even try to put his right hind foot down, and now he`s using it a bit. Still with a little of a favour on the other 3 legs, but it is a definite visual improvement from yesterday.

Also he went pee! Yay! That means that his bladder hasnt been leaking any fluids. The vet was sure that his insides were okay, but they said that sometimes with an xray so soon its hard to be sure. But now that he`s peed, I feel much better!

  22. Triple YAY for Henry!

Posted 3 years ago by miu #

  23. Hoorah for pee! Go Henry! :)

  24. BTW, I heard from his previous owners that Miska aka Admon had fallen from the balcony not once not twice - he did it three (3!!!) times. Once when he was living with his first owner and twice from the third floor when he was living with them. I thought neither his human parents nor he himself were the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Posted 3 years ago by miu #

  25. Yeah for Pee!!!! Yeah for Henry!!!!

Thank goodness Miska is okay too Miu!

  26. THREE TIMES MIU??

Oh man. That silly little kit. Well, we're practically cementing over our windows, so this isn't going to happen again.

  27. Yayyyyy! Doing the Happy Pee Pee Dance (in reverse??) for Henry! You're one tough little cookie Henry. Take it easy on that little leg of yours. It will take awhile but you'll be back to racing up and down hallways in no time. Our dog Amos has managed to pull off some fromt leg injuries in the past, leaving him hobbling for a good week on three legs. Always got back to normal though. Thanks for the updates Skirty. :D

  28. Further Update:

Henry has continued to use his litterbox well, he peed twice this morning and he just pooped, which is good because the topical pain reliever he's on might have made him constipated.

He's still limpin' around, but he's definitely improving. Once he starts moving around a little more like normal I'll shoot a short video of it and post it up for you guys so you can see the progress yourselves!

    Purrs!

  29. Oh my, I'm just catching up from the weekend, what a scary ordeal..So glad to hear the little guy is doing better..but if he does need to see the vet again, and you can't afford it, please don't consider the humane society..come here first, I'm sure we can figure out something.

  30. Yay for Henry. How scary that must have been for you. I'm glad everything worked out ok.
