Gabe's going to the vet

(44 posts)
  1. The appointment is for 3:00 this afternoon, and he will have his blood drawn for testing to begin the diagnostic process. The vet agrees that this isn't just stress; if it were, he should have gotten over it by now. I have to try to get in touch with his first mom to see when the weight loss started. I have her cell phone number, but Mr. Leeny said that, on the day we went to meet Gabe, she had mentioned going to Florida. I'll do my best to reach her; that's all I can do.

Last night Gabe drank a serving of KMR, about 3 tablespoons. I was so happy that I took the resurrection crucifix off my bedroom wall and kissed it! He took about another tablespoon this morning. When the vet called, though, he said he generally doesn't recommend KMR for adult cats because it can upset their stomachs. When I was buying it yesterday, I looked at the ingredients, and it does contain milk products. That surprised me.

The vet reminded me, and I told him I knew, that the blood test may still reveal something that would mean it would be best for Gabe to go to the Bridge. Knowing something, even something like that, would be better than this suspense. He is such a sweet boy, though. He spent last night at the foot of the bed. When the alarm rang this morning, he got up and came to me to be pet and to rest on my abdomen, just like it was a signal! Mr. Leeny just called to tell me that Gabe is exploring the kitchen again. No matter how long or short his time with us, Gabe has a permanent place in my heart.

  11. I just spoke with Gabe's first mom. The pix on Catster were taken about a year ago, in the spring or summer of 2007. She first began noticing his weight loss in December of that year. I told her what was going on and asked her if she would like to be told the diagnosis or told that Gabe was helped to the Bridge, if that turns out to be necessary; she said yes to both. I assured her that, if Gabe is euthanized, he will leave with my arms around him and having reassurances spoken in his ear. (If it please You, God, don't let that be necessary, though. Please let my sweet boy have something treatable and give him recovery.)

  13. Oh Leeny..I'm so worried about Gabe and I'm in tears as I've been following every word of progress. I hope there is a simple explanation for what he's going through. For sometime now I've been watching my four sibblings who are now 15 mos.old and everyone seems to be of a reasonable weight except for Oreo. I see her eat twice a day...usually kibble and sometimes kibble and wet food. She eats only small amounts but has Never put on any padding at all. I can feel her hip bones when I pet her and I'm very worried there may be something wrong. Jeff seems to think she's just lankier than the others and tends to run slim. I can't afford to take her in for testing which really works my guilt buttons. If I hadn't added these 4 to my family they would all be hungry, wandering ferals right now. That doesn't mean I can afford to pay vet bills but I love her soooooo much that I wish there was some way I could know for sure that she is just a lean and lanky build and that she'll fill out more as she ages. She sleeps on my bed most of the day which makes it hard to know (as I'm sleeping at night) just how active she actually is at night. Sorry Leeny I'm not trying to hi jack your thread...but I see some real similarities and wanted to mention..Do others have cats that never seem to put on the padding (twiggy like builds) and are still healthy? I am a worry wort and find after a long period of time it's so debilitating. I'm hoping so much that Gabe is going to be just fine...it would sure give me hope for my Oreo.

  16. Karenopa, as Tiny Tim [the Dickens character, not Herb Khaury :-) ] said, "God bless us, every one"--you, me, Gabe, and Oreo.

On second though, Herb Khaury did say that, too.

  17. Karen, my Milo is lean like that. He's long and tall, but skinny. I can feel and almost see his spine and his hip bones as well. He eats a lot, but is also VERY active and healthy.

  20. Karenopa, my concern is that Gabe wasn't always like this. Until last December, he was as he looks in his Catster photos. Right around the time he turned 3 years old, something happened that is causing him to lose weight drastically and continuously. If Oreo has always been thin and her weight is stable, it's less likely that there's something wrong with her.

  21. That was my thought, too, Leeny. When he started losing weight, did that coinside with when he was confined to the small bedroom, Leeny?

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  22. Leeny thank you for encouraging me when you're in fact having such a tough time with Gabe. I pray there's a logical, treatable explanation for this pretty baby of yours. I see from his Catster photo that he was indeed of a good weight then. How much weight has he actually lost since then? Again...Thank you for your encouraging words..I see you as such an incredibly strong woman and really wish I was more like you.

  23. I don't know, GD. Evidently his first mom wasn't living in the place that she just left. When she was trying to recall, she said, "I was living with [friend's name], so it must have been in December." I don't know what the living arrangement there was like.

  24. Karenopa, I don't know how much total weight he has lost. He lost 0.8 pound in the 2 1/2 weeks between his exam and his feleuk test, though, and that's pretty significant.

Posted 3 years ago by Leeny #

  25. Leeny, I am still hoping that it is something treatable. Hyperthyroidism is very common in cats and often presents with weight loss, albeit the kitties usually stay thin despite eating and I know that Gabe is not eating. Still hoping for good news.

  26. Karenopa - my Chloe is a 'stocky' girl which I didn't really see or notice until Mili joined the family. Mili is thin... I can feel her spine when I pet her, but she is as healthy as can be. Both my girls are. Just a difference in their build - just like people.

  27. I was just wondering, Leeny, since being confined to a tiny bedroom must have been quite a change to him. He may have become depressed. He may also have changed his eating habits if he wasn't really able to run around and play and get exercise and would not need as many calories for energy as he previously had. But if he's still losing weight now, something else may be causing it.
    Best of luck, Gabster!

  28. Leaving now to get my sweet boy for the trip to the vet. I'll report back after the appointment.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. As I said once before, they're a lifeline.

  29. God's Blessings and Prayers to Gabriel!!! Needing some great news sweetie!

  30. I'm back. On examination, the vet found both of Gabriel's kidney's to be unusually small. His gums were also somewhat pale, and his temperature was 103 degrees. Gabriel's blood was drawn for a CBC and profile, and I was given Orbax antibiotic pills to give him because of the fever (this antibiotic should not upset his stomach). The results from the blood test will be available tomorrow. The vet said to keep trying various foods he might like and suggested baby food.

When the feleuk test came back negative, the next possibility that came into my mind was a problem with kidney functioning. If the blood test verifies this, the next step will depend on the severity of the malfunction. If it can be treated so that Gabe's quality of life improves, it will be treated; if not, Gabe will be helped to the Bridge.
