Gabe is eating!

(39 posts)
  1. Solid food, and he's pooped normally three times since Saturday night. He went from eating the solids in the canned food along with the Pedia-gravy, to eating canned food with kibble mixed in with just enough water to moisten the kibble, to eating plain moistened kibble. When I left for work, I left three bowls of dry kibble spaced around the kitchen. He started eating in the kitchen yesterday, but I still feed him in the bedroom sometimes when I need to monitor his food intake and make sure his sisters aren't competing with him.

Gabe was very skittish this morning, running from one place to another, avoiding the other cats, and backing off when I tried to pet him. Buttercup had been hissing at him soon after he awoke, and I don't know if that's what upset him. I sprayed some Feliway around the bedroom. I hope that helps him calm down; I haven't seen him act this way before.

FIP test results not back yet.

  12. Yes, Gabe is 3 years old. When I first posted him on Catster, I entered the wrong year of birth. He first appeared as 6 months old. When someone (GD, I think?) pointed out to me that I said he'd been living in one room for almost a year, I went back and corrected his birth year.

  13. Debster, I have a poop story related to my visit to the GI specialist that I promised him I'd post on TDK. Gabe's illness started right after that, though, and I never did it. I'll start a new thread about it soon :-)

  14. Glad to hear Gabe is eating. Hopefully you can find out what has made him skittish. could it be there are louds sounds going on in your neighborhood, Buttercup is beating up on him when no one is looking or something else could be causing him to be so scared. Hope he can relax with the feliway.

  16. SMM, my husband had fallen asleep in front of the TV this morning with the sound up quite loud (he's hard of hearing), and the movie "Mississippi Burning" was the program he'd been watching. On my way out the door, I turned off the sound. (I use white noise machines in the bedroom to keep out his TV noise.)

  17. Yeah, it was me commenting on Gabster's age. I'm so happy he seems to be doing well. Hopefully he'll get over whatever scared him.

  18. Mr. Leeny just called to tell me the Gabster is relaxing on the bed, so he's okay for now. Still no word on the FIP test.

  21. Yea Gabe!!!! You get all better now!

  22. This is awesome Leeny! I'll bet Gabe starts to put weight back on in no time at all! Maybe all the sudden eating has upset his tummy a little making him act jumpy? I hope he and Buttercup can both relax in time. Good Job Leeny! You've been Gabe's rock...He's so lucky to have you.

  24. The vet just called with the results of the FIP test. He says that Gabe has been exposed to FIP at some time in the past. It would take a complicated test, though, to see if he has the FIP virus in his body at present. Because Gabe has improved so dramatically with the antibiotic, the doctor will assume that a bacterial infection made him sick. The vet said, though, that if Gabe stops eating again, to let him know right away because FIP could be involved. I think the doctor is concerned about FIP because Gabe's weight loss started 7 months ago. He also wants Gabe to stay on the antibiotic for an extra week, so I have to go by the clinic and pick up some more pills.

Earlier today, I called Gabe's first mom and left a message on her answering machine telling her that Gabe just had an infection and that he was doing so much better now. I'm going to send her an e-mail asking if he has ever been vaccinated for FIP, because that would produce the antibodies like exposure would.

  25. Excuse my ignorcane, but what is FIP?

Posted 3 years ago by Airyshone #

  26. FIP is feline infectious peritonitis. It makes cats very sick and they can't eat. One website I consulted said it was a fatal disease. It's incurable, but a cat can be given supportive therapy. Few who get the active disease, though, survive.

It is possible for a cat to have the virus dormant in its body. Good nutrition and regular veterinary care, plus minimizing stress, can keep the dormant virus from becoming active. As the vet said, though, the test to see if a cat has the dormant virus is very complicated.

The same website that called FIP fatal said that most cats who are exposed to it throw it off and do not get the active disease or become chronically infected with the dormant virus.

  27. Could he infect your other cats?

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  28. The vet says no, GD. I asked him about that before I let the girls share food dishes with him. The girls are both vaccinated against FIP, but with the financial outlay for Gabe's treatment, it's going to be September before Penny gets her annual exam and shots (she was due for them this month). I wanted to be sure that Penny's immunization would continue to protect her until then, particularly because she's the cat who spends the most time around Gabe.

  29. Thanks Leeny, I had never heard of it before so it's probably not common down here.

  30. Oh, that's good news, Leeny! I hope with the antibiotics he'll be just fine! Hugs for The Gabster!
