May I pay tribute to your Katie by sharing a song that I wrote for mine? She’s been at the Bridge for 5 years, and I’m sure that our Katies have met and are having a wonderful time playing together.
The song goes to the tune of James Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James”.
There was an old kitty who lived in my home.
For seventeen years there she had been my companion.
She slept in the armchair and she sat in the window
Waiting to greet me when I arrived home.
While I was relaxing, she climbed in my lap,
Purring and kneading and nuzzling my hand
And, while she was resting, I stroked her soft coat
And sang her a song that was soft but was clear
because I was sure she could hear:
Good night, my precious kitty,
Rockabye Sweet Baby Kate.
Shaded gray hues are the colors you use.
Go and settle on down in your dreams,
and rockabye Sweet Baby Kate.
Back in early October, I’d take her to church.
The Pastor would pet her and give her his blessing.
Every good thing we gave her; there was nothing left missing
With so many years past, and not many more to go.
There’s a song that we sang to remember St. Francis,
A song about creatures all great and all small,
A song that we sing of our home in the sky,
And I have to believe it, for the promise it makes
Is all that has kept me alive.
Now goodbye, my precious kitty,
Rockabye Sweet Baby Kate.
Rainbow-bright hues are the colors you’ll use.
Go and play by the Bridge while you wait,
and rockabye Sweet Baby Kate.
