So as many of you know, I posted about my new kitty today. I was worried about leaving him at home since he was so upset when we tried keeping him out of the bedroom last night. After coming home, he seems to have lost his lovin'. :( He's not letting me hold him like I did before I left him for work nor Dan. I think my kitty hates me!

Basil is not a cuddler. He comes to bed with me every night but on his terms. He sleeps at my feet. He wants a belly pat, cheek rub, and then he moves and snuggles my foot. At that point if he is touched he will leave. During the day if I am in the living room on the couch he sits on the back with his paw on me but if I touch him he leaves. Teaser is not the worlds biggest snuggler either. Deuter snuggles but he is always in play mode. He snuggles and then wiggles. The best part with Deuter and Basil they always have their motor running. I have never heard a cat purr like Basil--we heard him before we ever saw him. You just have to work with the kitten. He is after all feline and will want things his way and on his terms. The joy of cats!

It's just weird how he went from so cuddly yesterday to stand offish... :( I guess I'll have to get in the fickle feline swing of things.

somtims they do that.......i had one kitten who went frm loving me to be scared to hell of me for awhile till i seperated her from the others and she was ok. so somtimes u have to adjust things and make him more welcome, esepcially when he's new and getting used to things. just keep trying to be extra good to him!

It may actually be a good sign that he's getting more comfortable in his surroundings - he may not need your reassurance so much. Don't worry, kittens have short attention spans and are easily distracted. If he's treated with consistent kindness and gentleness, chances are good he'll respond with affection.
Not all cats like to sit in laps or be held. This doesn't mean that they don't show affection! Dom, one of my cats, can't stand to be picked up, sit in one's lap, etc. But she meows for me to pet her, and she'll race to use the scratching post every time I walk past it because she knows I'll pet her when she uses it. She also occasionally loudly announces her 'kill' when she brings me a little furry stuffed toy and drops it at my feet. (Another case when she knows I'll pet her for bringing it.)

anncetera, that is so cute. Oliver is sorta like that. Does not want to be held or be a lap kitty, BUT gets between Bob and me on the sofa and stays for 2-3 mins. looking for face rubs, gives kitty kisses with his eyes and then, "okay, 'nuff of that, see ya". and pouces off to do and see other adventures. He is just a year old.

Aww, your kitten is punishing you for leaving him alone! Don't worry, he'll come around again.

Well now it seems like he just doesn't want to be picked up. When I lay down he comes up and rubs his face on my face and lays on me and cuddles like crazy. So confusing! I just hope he adjusts soon. Dan and I are making him a present; a kitty condo! I hope he loves it.

Don't be surprised if he doesn't immediately play with the kitty condo, kits are like little kids....some like the boxes more than the presents. Let him be and don't push anything on him, he will come to things such as cuddling on his own terms. I have five furbabies and 3 out of the 5 are cuddlers, but again on their own terms...I can pick up and hold 2 of them...most of them sleep next to me or on the bed with me, again each in their own space and comfort zones. For one thing, they sure aren't like dogs whom for the most part will dote on their humans....nope cats have slaves is so true, lol. Little old people with furry coats on most days :) >^..^<

Theanimechick, if you do need to pick him up, make sure you get all 4 of his feet quickly placed such that they're not dangling. Kitties usually feel much more secure when they've got 'four on the floor,' or are positioned in such a way as to be able to spring away easily.
If he doesn't want to be picked up, I'd recommend you don't pick him up any more than you need to.

I was playing with Leela a day after adopting her, and accidentally scared her. It was just the feet-in-slippers-shuffle, but boy was she scared. She did the wide-eyed, sideways poofed up thing, ears so flat they dissappeared, but what scared me was that she looked at me like she didn't even know me. I suddenly realized that she didn't! After going through the getting to know each other stage, she still jumps sideways at me (it's fiddler crab season!), but it's in play.

I'm starting to think it's because he's in play mode all the time now. The first day he didn't have many toys but now he has a ton and he's constantly playing. I guess whenever I try to pick him up he's to riled up to want to be held. I did notice though that whenever I'm lying down (especially on the floor) he loves to cuddle and nuzzle. Maybe it's the heights...:-/
