  1. I'm a newbie here. I need help in kitten care. Do help if you can!

I dont know whats bothering my little stray kitten who is just 3 months old. He seems to be sick from today afternoon. Does not eat well. Sleeps a lot. But does not have fever. I dont also see him vomiting or having diarrhea.
Also, he seems to feel cold (shivers a little when the room temperature is cold). However, he has been dewormed and vaccinated regularly.

Over phone, my Vet instructed me to give him Ampicillin. I have administered a few drops of Ampicillin (branded as Roscillin) to him. I'm also giving him water (he seems to be thirsty). But still he does not show interest in food. And that worries me.

Two days before he had killed a fairly big chameleon and eaten half of it. He eats lizards often. He got drenched a bit in rain yesterday. Is that affecting him? Has he got fever? I generally give him Pedigree Kitten formula mixed with milk. Will the lactose in the milk affect him?

I can call on the Vet only tomorrow evening (now its night here). What can I do before that? I'm very worried. Please help.

  2. Keep doing what your vet instructed you to do. If you really think he's not gonna make it, call your vets emergency service, all vets have an emergency #. If yours doesn't, get a new vet, animal injuries don't always happen on a Mon-fri 9-5 schedual.
Good luck, it sounds like your taking great care of him already.

  3. I wished I could help you but I have never had kittens, only adults.

When was the last time he ate something? Could you access to tuna gravy? I think it's a good sign he drinks but he should have nourishment soon.

  4. Please take the kitten to your local vet and remember that animals will often sleep alot during a healing process. Good luck and let us know how he's doing.
    BTW..welcome to TDK!!!!!!

  5. Get baby to a vet as soon as you can.
Meanwhile just the standards. Keep him warm, out of drafts and hydrated. Offer bland food (baby foods like Gerber infant chicken)
Chameleons do not seem to be on any list of toxic animals so that alone should not be the issue. But reptiles are a common carrier of some pretty unpleasant bacteria like samonella or pseudomonas so there is no telling if there is a potential problem from that.

  6. Avoid cow's milk, you can try KMR (available at pet stores) . There are milk like products available designed for cats that are available in grocery stores in the cat food section. Good luck!

  7. Please keep offering the food & water to your kitten. Keep him stable as possible until you get him to the vet. (You cannot tell if your cat is running a fever or not, unless you have a rectal thermometer and have taken his temperature.)

It's common for a cat or kitten that's running a fever to lose appetite; it's often one of the first signs of an infection. So you may have caught this problem early! Please get your kitten to the vet as soon as you can.

  8. As usual, Ann's advice is good. Perhaps the lizard made him sick. It is always best to keep a kitten indoors all the time--these things wouldn't happen. Get him to the vet ASAP. And welcome to TDK--you have come to the right place, and keep us posted on your kitten's health.

  9. Kolammal, mine are nearly always sick after they eat a lizard of substantial size--let's say anything longer than 1 1/2 inches. If it's a gecko, ANY size will make them ill. All kinds of digestive upsets follow. And a word to the wise: don't be anywhere near that litter box when the result is re-presented to the world. Lizard eating also makes for deadly kitten flatulence. Sorry to be so graphic, but if you have one that likes to hunt and kill and eat lizards, you might as well know this stuff.

I have 2 lizard hunters, both females. They are *very* proud of their prowess. I take their prey away any time I see it.

  10. if you do't see any vomit diarrea or something diferent on him, cats get some time depressed, my cat did the same when my husband's father passed away, she saw my husband crying and she got depressed, but its importan to look for the opinion of the vet, meanwhile give your baby a lot o love...hug it so much talk to him, hope its only that.....but its important that baby visits the vet as soon as possible.....i wish you and your baby be find!!!!
