  1. I have a white carpet area rug that I caught Sylvester eating yesterday. Just now he threw up undigested dry food until he was practically dry heaving. This occurred an hour ago. I picked up the carpet and put it in a closet so he cannot get to it anymore. I tried to get him to drink some water but he is just wandering around. He went and ate some dry food and then some wet food. I am going to continue to watch him and if he continues to throw up, will take him to the emergency vet place.

What has me perplexed is why he is eating the carpet. Last night when I offered him catnip he didn't want any of it which is totally the opposite of him. I am a bit concerned.

  2. Karin..I don't know how to advise you...could there have been carpet shampoo residue in that rug or scotchguarding? I hope Sylvester will be ok. I hope Anncetera sees you thread. Prayers to Sylvester that he's not seriously ill! Keep us posted.

  3. He is playing with a string I have and a mouse that chirps when you move it. He is now grooming himself so hopefully he is okay. I will continue to watch him.

  4. Perhaps this was a fluke? I am praying it was a one time incident and that Sylvester is just fine. Teaser throws up for no reason it seems. Vet says she is the healthiest cat so he thinks perhaps she eats too fast. Basil throws up and we know why.

I will do the best that I can for you and that is pray. You have the hard part the worrying, so I am sending prayers for peace for you too.

  5. Karen, my two will munch on things once in a while, but it usually comes out one end or the other. I think I've heard that if cats constantly chew or try to eat a certain thing constantly, it's because they are lacking something in their diet. I've also thought possibly mine chew on things because they're bored, or maybe trying to get attention because I'm gone too long at work or something like that. It wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on what "comes out"!

  6. A month ago when they were coming to fix the balcony's for my unit and my neighbor. I wasn't told they were coming for a third day of work and so my property manager called and told me that she had locked Sylvester and Mia in my bedroom without food or water (which made me quite upset at the time but couldn't do anything about it). When I got home at 6pm they were still there. I let them out and fed them their evening wet food. Within an hour, Sylvester was throwing up his dry food and thought it might have been that he ate it too fast. This time around, I was hoping the same that he ate too fast but I did see him eat the carpet yesterday so I am thinking it could have been that. I will try to see what "comes out" as MMM suggested but unfortunately my cats seem to poo at odd hours. Will have to watch who goes to the cat box.

  7. Rather you than me, SMM! I hope Sylvester will be OK soon.

  8. SMM, someone barfs around here a few times each week. I don't think it is too unusual, but I also have never seen anyone eating a rug. Just keep an eye on him--I'm sure he'll be fine! But hide that rug permanently!

  9. Probabley just a kitty bug. It happens to the best of them. It doesn't sound like anything to dangerous right now. I'd just watch him, like your already doing!

  10. I have hid the rug, CW. Hopefully he won't take to trying to eat the rug on the kitty condo. I may go out and get some cat grass for him so that if the urge to eat something occurrs he will eat that instead of the carpeting on the kitty condo. I hate to have to throw out the kitty condo. What I don't like is that cats in my experience use it to clean out their digestive system so they throw it back up.

  13. Hi SSM, How is Sylvester this morning?? The other day I caught Oliver breaking apart willow on a basket and trying to eat it. I got the wicker away from him. I think it was a chewing thing. He now has stopped this.

  14. My guys eat strange things, too. Bobby once ate a piece out of a corner of the wall!! Also, the window seat thing I got for them has this fluffy covering on it - I've had to cover it up with a pillow case because Bob was constantly pulling on the fluff and eating it. I got them these fluffy pads to sleep on - same thing happened and I had to toss them. When I get bottled water, they both spend hours trying to eat the plastic wrap! Milo eat any paper he can get to!

Karin, I hope Sylvester is recovering! Did he eat a lot of the carpet? I know sometimes they play or something and start biting on something - the way their tongues are, once something's in their mouths, they usually can't get it back out. I've pulled out countless dustbunnies, spiderwebs, rubber bands etc. from especially Bobby's mouth.

  15. Oh, and my bulletin board is history- Milo thought it was just too much fun munching on the papers there and pulling out the thumb tacs and playing with them!

  16. LOL, GD, maybe they sold you furry termites?

  19. Thanks all, Sylvester seems to be doing okay. He ate some wet food and dry food and drank some water. He slept with me on the bed last night and no "yakking" occurred during the night. I have since hid the carpet and will hide the one I have in the bathroom.

  20. Good to hear Sylvester is doing well this morning. This is awkward, but, are you checking his box to make sure whatever he took in is being released back out? lol

Posted 3 years ago by feral #

  21. Yes and I didn't see anything as I use the clumping type of cat litter.

Posted 3 years ago by SylMiaFelixsMomma #

  22. If it comes out, you'll usually be able to see clumps of fuzz out the sides of said jewels. Sorry for the visual. lol

Posted 3 years ago by feral #

  23. No problem. I just went and checked and didn't see anything. Nothing on the "logs" and nothing on Sylvester.

  24. lol. Life is grand in California, hey? lol

  25. Glad to hear he's okay. It seems that animals have tough tummies. Think about what strays and wild animals eat and digest. Not that I'm saying they should it weird things, but they do. G-d gave then tough tummies for a reason.
Happy to hear all is better though.

  28. Glad Sylvester is OK. My meezer 'Lila likes to eat wierd stuff too.

  29. So happy to hear that all is well

  30. Karen-good to hear Sylvester is ok today.

GD-Max has a habit of chewing on the plastic coverings of bottled water packages, too! I don't think he eats it, he just chews and makes teeth marks. Both Max and Molly have done a number on my shower curtain, but I don't think they're doing it any more. Max also likes to chew on the plastic bags I put in the waste basket. Must be something about the plastic, or maybe the sound. Who knows what goes on in their little feline minds???
