  1. I've pulled big pieces of the plastic out of their mouths, and last week Bobby ate the plastic milk ring thing!!! Arrrrrgh! I've been covering up the water bottles, but I should really just take the bottles out of the wrapping!

  2. SMM, if he eats grass he will throw that up as well--but that's what's supposed to happen, it cleans out their stomach from hairballs. You may never know why he likes that carpet, but give him something safe to chew to distract him. Maybe some new toys will stop the boredom.

  3. Sultie always used to throw up regularly, a couple of times a month, and there was often no reason for it. Actually, a lot of the time I think he used it as a signal to stop eating, he could be a little pig at times. He also loves the sound of paper tearin, but he never ate it really. He'd (needs help with it now, poor arthritic man) sit at the newspaper and tear it into strips with such a happy look on his face :). Glad sylvester is doing well!

  4. Eric does that metsa! Stamps on paper (or flimsy cardboard) with his feet, then tears at it vigourously until it's in pieces. And you should see him with sturdier cardboard - the noise he makes!!!!

  5. SMM, some cats seem to have strange eating tendencies based on nutritional deficiencies. Other times, it just seems to be a weird sort of chewing behavior.

Assuming that his nutritional needs are well met, you might try giving him crumpled up balls of notebook paper, or pieces of brown paper sacks similarly wadded into balls. He may have a grand old time tearing those to shreds!

  6. Ann, thanks for the tip but only Mia is interested in the crumpled up balls of paper. The only thing I ever saw Sylvester shred was the toilet paper and he thankfully doesn't do that anymore. I have chewy balls he can bite but since Mia came along he is no longer interested in chasing them or playing fetch like he use too. He eats plenty of dry food (Science Diet light formula) which I thought was enough for fiber.

  7. SMM, it's possible there was something that smelled/tasted good on the carpet, or maybe he just likes the 'dental floss' experience he gets from chewing the carpet.

If he persists or starts on a new piece of carpet, you might want to talk with your vet about the behavior, to try and better determine what may be causing it, and how to go about a process of elimination to nail it down.

  8. Hmm... one other thought. If you take him to the vet, you might want to have the vet look at his mouth and gums. (Sometimes gum disease itches, and a cat will end up chewing all kinds of things in an effort to relieve the itch.)

  9. ann I had no idea how much you can learn from the gums. That was what our vet has us checking daily on Basil. When a FeLv positive cat goes into a crisis the gums lose color. He said the nose was the other tell because it will also lose color. Our problem with that is his nose is gray. He is almost to the point now he knows if I get to look in his mouth he gets a treat.

  10. SM, that's good to know about FeLv positive cats; I didn't know gums and nose were good points to check for that particular problem.

I do know that gums are also very good to check for overall circulation, jaundice, and so forth. Pink is a good color. Dark pink or reddish is not good; neither is a very pale pink, or yellowish, grayish, or bluish tinge.

Hey, and I'm glad to hear Basil's almost got the hang of the gum check! Funny how easily cats can be brib... um, trained.

  11. When they go into crisis they lose all color in their gums first. And you hit the nail on the head--he is my bribery is the only way boy! Bribe him to brush him, bribe to clean his teeth, bribe to keep him from jumping the dog, and if he can think of a way he comes up with other excuses that he needs to be bribed to do. He trained me well!

  12. Well, at the vet visit a month ago, the vet said that I should be brushing Sylvester's teeth as he had one tooth with some yellow deposit on it. I do have the brush and paste but Sylvester doesn't like it. Will look into getting a different flavor.

I just gave Sylvester and Mia's first ever dose of frontline. Mia did exceedingly well but Sylvester is upset with me. I gave them some treats to let them know they were good. Poor kitties. I had to do it as I saw some blood drops by the sink where they like to sit and watch me get ready for work and Mia has been biting and itching a lot. In fact just before I was going to put the frontline on them, Mia was sitting on my desk and I saw what they call "flea dust" aka flea poop. So even though they only sit on the balcony, there is a small tree next to the balcony and there are bushes below it. I mentioned this to the clerk at Petco and they said that is all it takes for the bugs to get around. He said it was a good idea. The darn stuff is expensive! It was $94 for six dosages which will be good for three months for each cat. Good investment if it means no fleas.
