  1. GD, how long did the seizure take? Didn't you notice anything unusual in Bobby's behaviour before you went to bed? Did Bobby lose the bowel and bladder control?

  2. OMG GD, I would have been scared out of my wits. My prayers to Bob, Milo and of course you as well. I will certainly keep Bobby in my prayers, (((HUGS)))

  3. GD I can say this, I'm so sorry for what you had to go thru, but I have already learned from this some "what to do and what not to do's" and have already looked up a 24 hr. vet near by and put the number in my purse..bless you for sharing the details here so others can be a little more prepared if we find ourselves in your situation..

  4. How scary! Hugs and prayers for you and Bobby.

  5. Good idea to put the vet and the 24 hour vet number in your phone book on your cell phone. I am going to do that right now. How badly did you fingers get bit, GD? Did they say it was nessary for you to get the tetanus shot even though you always observe Bob when he goes outside?

  6. OMG GD!! Hugs to you and Bobby. How scary for both of you. I hope it was just a one time thing and will never happen again. I cannot imagine what you and he went through. You, Bobsky, and Mi are in my prayers!!! Keep us updated.

  7. Holy crap ! I'd have been scared out of my mind. Positive energies that this was a one time thing. I have no idea what I would have done. My boys (human kind) put me through my paces as they were growing up.... it's very difficult to stay calm.

  8. Sending hugs and prayers to Great Dane, Bobby and Milo. I got bitten by my sister-in-law's cat several years ago and my doctor gave me a tetanus shot and a round of antibiotics. It's just the safest course of action to prevent infections or other problems. It seems a cat's saliva can cause severe infection to a human when the skin is penetrated.

  9. Not for sure if this will help...but years ago I had a German Shepherd that had epilepsy. The first time he ever had one scared me to death. Whenever he would have them...I would sit and talk to him and try to calm him...and would try to make sure he didn't bite his tongue. I wasn't suppose to try and restrain him because of the muscles stiffening. He would always be very tired afterwards and seem to be almost in another world...kinda spaced out...especially right after having one. It seemed to take a day or two for him to be back to normal. He took phenobarbitol to keep the seizures under control but lived a very normal life. I have never experienced it with a cat and hopefully it will be nothing but a one time thing. Sending prayers to you and Bob.

  10. Am looking up emergency vet numbers in my area. Thanks, Bobsky, for the kick in the pants to get this done. Hope you feel well soon, little buddy. Never got bitten by a cat, but did get bitten by a raccoon once. Had to get a tetnus shot and antibiotics for that. Fortunately, she had had rabies shots.

  11. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/People/lowekamp/feline_epilepsy.html

"Causes of seizures include infections, tumors, toxic chemicals, and epilepsy. Most seizures in cats have a cause other than epilepsy. It's most useful to think of epilepsy as a word for seizures for which no other cause has been found."

  12. Miu, I read in the papers the first vet gave me that sings of an on-coming seizure, amoung other things, can be wandering and meowing loudly. He does that often, but he did it a lot last night.
Apparently, in seizures, they most often do lose bladder control, but Bobby didn't. He was on his side, his legs were swimming, he was salivating and gnashing his teeth and hissing. Poor boy!

I had thought of putting an emergency vet number in my wallet and on the fridge, but it's one of those things you just keep telling yourself you'll get around to, and never do. Well, I've got it now!

The bites I got didn't bleed that much, but they did pierce the skin and both my fingers swelled up to point where I couldn't (still can't) bend them and they hurt. I'd gotten my last shot about 18 years ago when I was bitten by a dog - I guess it's the thing to do after getting bit by an animal. After asking if Bobby had all his shots, the very next thing the doctor asked was how long it had been since my last tetanus shot. Since I'd gotten a shot after the dog-incident, I was kind of expecting him to ask about it.

  13. Oh, GD! How scary! I'm glad Bobby seems to be better, and I'll keep praying that it's a one-time thing.

  14. Better to get a tetanus shot than rabies shots from what I hear. Just finished putting all the vets info in my cell phone. I have their cards in my purse but think it is more effective to have it on my cell phone.

GD, sounds like you could use a nice cup of coffee along with Sven to help you relax those shoulder and neck muscles that tensed up from Bobsky's ordeal. Hope you hear from the vet soon. I bet it is agony waiting for the results. Make sure to eat something good for lunch.

Posted 3 years ago by SylMiaFelixMomma #

  15. Oh, and Miu, I'm not sure how long it lasted, since I was asleep when it started. Probably no longer than 2 minutes. The vet said over 5 minutes and the papers said over 10 was bad.

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  16. Oooooh, I would love a visit from Sven! And coffee, too!
ILMC, the papers the vet gave me listed phenobarbitol as a medication for seizures as well as valium and others. I'll have to wait and see what the results are and also see if he needs further testing. An expensive day - between the two of us, we spent $650.00 before noon! Wish I could wake up and start over!

  17. I have the 24 hr clinic now in my cell too! continued prayers for you and Bobby...

  18. Prayers that it was only a one time thing.
GD,when you get home if your fingers are still swollen and painful you can put an ice pack on them and elevate them and it should help.Put your hand up on a pillow(I know you probably won't have time to do this for long) and apply ice. It will help decrease the swelling. Gosh I'm so sorry to hear about this,it's so scary but you did great. I'm going to find the 24h vet around here and put the number in my phone.

Posted 3 years ago by Buttercup #

  19. Thanks, Marsha! The first vet got me an ice pack that I put on while I was there. My fingers are still both as swollen as they were after the bites at 4 this morning, so I'll try the ice and elevation tonight. (Actually I have the ice pack in my car - I'll go get it and stick it in the freezer and ice my fingers a bit).

I'm glad this will lead for you guys/gals to put emergency vet numbers in your phones - you never know! I have the vet's card, but I'm going to put it in my phone as well, both in case I lose it, but also because I was so freaked out and shaking, I could barely dial the number.

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  20. Poor GD! Take care of yourself.

Posted 3 years ago by miu #

  21. GD, if you have voice activated dialing feature on your cell phone, you might want to label your listing as vet emergency when you say it to your phone. I have that feature on my phone as it came with it built in.

  22. I'll take care of Bobby, and then I promise to take care of myself! Bobby's vet looked very stern when he looked at my fingers and told me to got to the doctor asap. I told him I was, but that Bobby having a seizure and going to the vet was way more important than me getting swollend fingers from a bite and going to the doctor.

Bobby is still sleeping on his chair. He's looking around alertly now when there's a noise and he's getting lots of pets. He's rolling onto his back for belly-rubs and is kneading the air and the chair. Seems pretty content now!

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  23. GD, I'm so sorry to hear of this! I'm glad that Bobby seems better now, and I'm hopeful the bloodwork will at least rule out some potentially nasty causes behind the seizure.

I'm also glad you got medical care right away. Cat bites and claw marks are nothing to mess around with, especially ones that are punctures and don't bleed much. Bacteria gets trapped, and the infection can become pretty severe if not treated fairly promptly.

  24. Karin, I would barely speak either, but that is a good idea - I'll check it out! Thanks!

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  25. Thanks, Anncetera. I tend to wait forever to go to the doctor when I'm sick, but my fingers hurt so bad I knew I had to. Also, both vets telling me to go really convinced me I had to.

  26. Does Bobby have his blankie with him??

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  27. He doesn't, 2b, but I almost went home to get it for him on my way from the doctor to the pharmacy. Boss had a meeting, though, and I didn't want to wait too long before getting back to my baby, so I didn't go get it.

The antibiotics the doc prescribed are enormous! I had to break them in half, but couldn't because of my two fat fingers. I had to get Boss to break it in half, and I'll have to get him to break another one in half for me to take tonight!

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  28. GD..I'm worried that if this was something Bobby may have ingested, and not some other internal manifestation, should we be worried about little Milo possibly being in any danger here as well? I sure don't want to frighten you further but I'm just worried for Bobby's little brother too. Just in case. :(

Posted 3 years ago by Karenopa #

  29. Poor Bobby - and poor you GD! Let's hope the blood tests come back negative, and that this was just a one off. Hugs & scritches!

Posted 3 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  30. Karen, the first vet asked me over and over again if he could have gotten into anything. I had looked around before taking him, just in case, and I looked again when I dropped him off there while I went to the gym for a couple of hours. My place is very small and there's no way he could have gotten into anything without me seing evidence of it.

    MCW, I sure hope so!
