I promised an update, so here it is!
They're two kittens, feral, sex unknown. One is a shorthaired brown tabby; the other is a long-haired mostly black tuxedo kitty. I estimate their age to be about 12 weeks; definitely weaned.
In any other regard, I haven't been able to assess them at all yet. From what I could see of the tabby, and from how little the box they were carried in weighed, they're definitely skinny. Folks working at the shop said they haven't seen the mother in days; they think maybe she was picked up by animal control. (If so, she was probably euthanized if she was feral.)
No other kittens were found, in searching the area with the parked cars where these kitties were found. It's been blisteringly hot for the past 3-4 days; I can't imagine where these guys might have been able to find water. (Thank goodness they didn't get into any antifreeze.)
Apparently the tuxie isn't completely averse to people; my friend told me they were kind of petting it. But the brown tabby wants nothing to do with people at all.
As soon as I can get photos and more information, I'll let y'all know. (That part could take a few days.)
The people working at the shop were about to call Animal Control when my friend Amy called. If she hadn't been there, at least one of these little guys probably would be put down within 72 hours.
