PLEASE HELP!!!
(147 posts)-
I just came upon this post. Bless you for helping. You have gotten some good words of wisdom here. What an amazing Mama kitty you have found...poor sweetie staying with her dead babies.
As I think others have mentioned, if dehydrated and malnourished herself, Mama may not have enough milk for baby. Make sure Mama gets lots of food and water. I pray that they both blossom in your care. Keep us posted.Posted 3 years ago by Tigerlilly #

Keep up with the Pedialyte, as much as you can, as often as you can. 5 ml every 20 minutes is good!
As already mentioned, it takes a lot of fluid to get dehydration to go away (and to kick-start those kidneys into functioning properly again). You're doing exactly the right thing; the vet you're going to see tomorrow should be able to help you with additional information, instructions, and things to watch for.
Please be sure the mama cat is also getting Pedialyte, and that she's eating.

is him walking like he is "drunk" part of being dehydrated? or could this be a sign of something else? I have gone from 5ml every 20 mins to 10ml once an hour..as you can see its going to be a long night

Mix some KMR in the pedialyte and give him as much as you can H.
Please see Anncetera2's thread about her rescuing 2 dehydrated kittens;

sadly it doesnt look like he is going to make it. He is at the point where he cant even hold his head up and just falls over. I have been up all night with him, holding him on my chest to make sure he stayed warm...i just dont understand where i went wrong...he isnt meowing like he is in pain he is just taking rappid shallow breaths and would rather lay with his mom..so i had to put them in a old dog crate so she would stay with him...even then he follows her around the crate the best he can

Hizlilbrat, you have been trying your best to keep the baby going, it may not have been his time to be here or its his time to cross the bridge to play with others and chase butterflies. If he does pass on, don't beat yourself about it, you have done an excellent job trying to help this little one. Afterwards (if it happens) just try to get the mom hydrated, she sounds like she is having a rough time too, poor baby. Bless you for the things you are doing. the mom does need love too and you seem like just the one to give it to her.

Hi, Hizlilbrat, this is very sad news but all of us who read this site are pulling for you and the little one and where there's life, there's hope. Keep trying -- you are doing amazingly well -- but also know that sometimes these wee ones just don't make it -- even the vets don't always know why, that's why they call it 'failure to thrive'; and your little one has been through so much already. I know what you're going through as I have been there; all you want is for them to pull through and if willing them would do it, they'd make it back from the brink so fast, but it doesn't always work. The poor baby probably does want to be with Mum, that's instinct, and inbetween trying to rehydrate him, perhaps best to put him with her, if she's happy to stay with him; that might cause him less distress. I don't know what time it is where you are; can you get them to an emergency vet? They are very lucky to have someone who cares about them so much taking care of them, and making both of them comfortable, whatever happens. Sometimes that's all you can do for a wee sick one but it's also everything. Keep us posted, we are hoping with you.

I'm so sorry H, you're doing a remarkable job and you can't do anymore. {{hugs}}

It may be at all you can do is keep him comfortable, at this point. If you can give Pedialyte every 15-20 min and a little Karo corn syrup on his gums at the same time, it might help. Please do all that you can to help the mama recover.
He has known love and affection in his life, because of you. But it's heartbreaking if they don't pull through a difficult time. Keep doing the best you can.

well he is still fighting for his little kitty life! He is such a sweetie! He still wont eat, but i can get the pedialyte and kayro in him..not sure how mcuh becuase he is spitting it back at me now..but i can only assume at least half of the 5ml syring is getting into him so i am just trying to do it more often. When i do the food or even kitten milk me shakes his head and meows real loud like it hurts him to swallow it?
I know it has been suggested another emerg. vet but we were at the emerg. vet once, a reg. vet once and another reg vet today..to be honest we live on a tight budget and my husband is frustrated thus far(not that he doesnt love animals too BUT we do have 2 little boys to think about) I'm sorry if this seems crule..believe me i wish i had all the money in the world to fix this little guy, i just dont have much of a choice!
Momma is eating OK, she is drinking LOTS which leads me to believe she may have kidney damage, she is also being seen today and will get shots(she was tested for lots of things before, but no shots)...since she is refusing to fee dhim i am going to have her spayed and i do plan to keep her...i really want this baby to make it though...momma is much better shape and i am not as worried about her

Yes, a wonderful job, HB, and of course your resources are not unlimited and you have to set priorities. As others have said, you've already done far more for this kitten than many other people would do.
Mom may just be dehydrated, too; that could be why she's drinking so much. Not only was she out in the heat, but, while her babies were alive, she also was losing a lot of fluid through her milk. Her own body probably doesn't have the resources to feed her remaining baby any more. It's good that you're going to have her spayed; she doesn't need to go through another round of kitten-bearing.
Just know that what you're doing is helping, even though it's frustrating.

First of all, I'm glad to hear you're getting the mama kitty taken care of!! That's so important.
And I'm thrilled to hear the kitten is hanging in there! Regarding the kitten, a couple of important notes.
Do you know how old this kitten is? How old did the vet say?
On the swallowing problem... has the vet checked to make sure there's nothing wrong with the kitten's throat?
How often are you feeding him? Is it still every 20 minutes or so?
When you give the kitten Karo, only give about 1/2 to 1 ml at a time (per feeding). If you're feeding him every half hour or so, he's getting plenty.
Go ahead and try mixing 1 part kitten milk replacer (KMR) and 1 part baby food (turkey or chicken, just the meat kind; not the chicken & noodle or turkey & sweet potato).
Or, even better, you can go ahead and try 1 part Pedialyte mixed with 1 part baby food (as described above). He may have gone without milk for so long that he's not digesting it very well any more.
When you feed him, make sure the food's about room temperature. Just squirt a tiny bit (1/2 ml or less) at a time, into his mouth. Give him time to swallow, then continue.
You can always give him Pedialyte! I'd almost recommend that for every 10 ml of food he gets, that he gets another 5-10 ml of Pedialyte.
Keep him from getting too hot or too cold; he's not able to control his body temperature well.
You may need to pee and poop the kitten, if it's less than 6 weeks old. Do you know how to do this? Take a warm, damp washcloth, and gently rub his genitals and anus in a circular direction for about 30-60 seconds. That should get the kitten to pee and/or poop on the washcloth.
Good luck, and keep trying! That is one very tenacious kitten!

I have been trying with the baby food and kitten milk...this is when he shakes his head and it doesnt seem any of it goes in..but i keep trying i am sure SOME of it is getting in. I am feeding and wtering him(wiht the syringe) every 30-45mins. The vet said he is between 4 and 6 weeks, but it was hard for him to even tell because of his size..BUT he does have ALL his front teeth(everything inside the eye teeth top and bottom) but no back teeth at all.
Momma tries to pee and poop him, if he doesnt go for her i do stimulate him.. I can always get him to pee, but not always to poop..any ideas? I have him and momma in a pet crate with a heating pad on low and covered by a towl in one corner the rest has news paper and small pet bed.
when we go to see the new vet at 2 i am going to have him check his throat. Lets all keep our fingers corssed!

HB, he may not have to poop because he hasn't been eating--nothing in, nothing out.
This kind of reminds me of when my boss's son was a baby. We gave him his liquid vitamins right before his bath, and he would spit them right back out. The dosage was based on the assumption that the baby would spit out most of the liquid; what was left in his mouth that he couldn't help swallowing was the amount that he needed.
