Auto Shop Kittens - update

  1. Well, it looks like the brown tabby is finally turning the corner. He's not eating on his own yet (that I've observed), but his appetite appears to be returning and his diarrhea is coming under control. I'm still forcing food/fluid 4x or more times per day, along with Vitamite II. The tiny fraction of a loperamide HCl tablet seems to have pretty done the trick (per online veterinary advice), in terms of slowing down the process of food through his gut, and reducing dehydration. (Trust me, I never would have administered this medication unless I found more than a couple of veterinarians that recommend it, nor if I couldn't find dosage information.)

Names under consideration for the brown tabby, chosen strictly for meaning:
    Varro - durable, strong
    Tiergan - strong-willed
    Faustus - lucky
Ellis - Pronunciation of L.S.; stands for Long Shot

The black & white kitten is eating and drinking entirely on his own. I'm supplementing with some Vitamite daily, but that's about it. He already feels like he weighs twice as much as when he arrived! Still bony, but a little less so every day. His back end is still wobbly, but that's to be expected. He tends not to walk so much as slink along, belly fairly low to the ground. Poor guy is still so scared of me!

Still thinking on a possible name for him.

  2. awww Ann, that's wonderful. The babies wouldn't have survived without you.
Scritches to the little guys! Hugs to you!

  3. Wow,that's wonderful Ann! So little Faustus and Domino(?) sound like they're doing so much better. I know that must be a big relief. I know that I worried about my little Dusty since he was growing so much slower than Chester for a long time. :)

  5. anncetera2 : Oh, you have the biggest heart! I am not sure how you came about fostering and caring for them, but from your update, the kittens seems to be thriving. What great news!

  6. Thanks, all! Buttercup, it's very strange... if you look at the two kittens together, the tuxie weighs about 30% more than the tabby. Either the tabby's always going to be a little guy, or his rough start in life has got him permanently stunted. (Heck, that's possible for both of them.)

I'll just be happy if they turn out to be mostly normal, both in terms of physical and neurological development.

  7. Tuttibella, if you want, you can read the cats & kitten post called "No rest for the wicked" to see how I came to be taking care of them.

  8. Glad to hear they are on the mend and health is starting to become stronger! How aout Everest it means strong as a wild boar for the brown tabby?
And Oran for the tuxie it means dark-haired!

  9. Ange, I'll add Everest to the list of possibilities!

I'm thinking the tuxie's going to clean up nicely, once he gets well enough for me to give him a bath. Then his little white paws, bib & chin are going to sparkle!

  10. Hmm,Ann,that could be why Dusty is so much smaller,he was in very rough shape when I got him and I wasn't sure he was going to make it. He was so dehydrated, his skin was tenting, his eyes were sunken,I was just scared when I saw him, lucky for me he is quite the little fighter. It looks like your little tabby boy is a fighter too. Cool!

  23. Anncetera...Thank you so much for all you put into these lost boys...There's a special place in Heaven for you one day. I think Otto and Ellis are meant to be..They sound so right. Continued prayers for the boys and many blessings to you dear.

  24. It's settled, then. The brown tabby is Ellis, and the tuxie is Otto.

Ellis is still having to be prompted to eat, but he's at least eating some on his own now. (He may also be eating when I'm not watching). He shakes his head to clear excess food from around his mouth, but he's still so weak in the legs that it just about knocks him off his feet. But he's wanting to sit up a bit more. All of these are great signs. It may not sound like much, but when you can't even get a cat that's starving to lift its head for food & water, it's good progress.

Otto has been playing with the pink jingle ball. He still doesn't care to be held, but he's not running away to hide from me when I approach anymore. He's definitely going to be a fluffy one - he's got undercoat like there's no tomorrow, and the fur on his tail is already noticeably longer than the rest of his coat.

  30. I'm excited; I just watched Ellis using the cardboard scratching pad. Poor little guy is so wobbly that each pull nearly knocked him over, but he wasn't about to let that stop him!

In another couple weeks, when they appear to be good on weight & hydration, I need to get them assessed for whatever's making them wobbly. There are some potential causes that are temporary and will likely be fixed with diet. Others, however, could be either a lifelong affliction or a very, very serious illness (like FIP).
