More advice needed for Marzipan

  1. Hi everyone! Sorry I've got more questions than contributions to this list so far . . . I'm hoping that will change as I learn more. And you all have been so helpful in offering advice . . . I hope you don't mind yet another long post of questions. So: he's doing pretty well on leash; he's not door-dashing very often any more--and when he does head out the door, he seems mostly interested in checking if Bubble, the neighbor's French bulldog, is out in the hallway to play with; and his weepy eyes and nose are getting better with antibiotics from his breeder/vet. The sticky tape is working like a charm. The bitter apple spray is keeping him away from the electrical cords. And I got rid of the huge philodendron and the crown of thorns (both of which I've had for nearly 15 years, so that was a little sad) and replaced them with cat grass and a jade plant.

But, he's still play biting. Quite a bit. I have several spray bottles (the noise makers did nothing, as he's completely fearless of loud sounds) and they are reasonably effective. But, he likes to cuddle up in the early morning hours--snuggle under my chin, purr like crazy, find another snuggly spot by my face and cuddle some more . . . and then he will not infrequently get up and bite me on the nose. Hard. Well, last night I must have been soundly asleep and when he bit me and I jumped, he actually cut my nose with his tooth. It was right on the bridge of my nose where the skin is especially thin, so it bled all over the place and left a cut about half an inch long. I'm really hoping it doesn't leave a scar. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean to bite VERY hard, since there's no mark from his teeth on the other side of my nose. And I know he's just playing--he's usually purring when he bites me. But, obviously, this needs to stop. I screamed and squirted him with the bottle right by the bed and locked him out of the bedroom.

I'd hate to have to lock him out of the bedroom permanently, because I love it when he snuggles up with me . . . but the biting must stop.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

  2. Hi Astrid,

Milo had a bad habit of hopping onto the counter and I couldn't get him to stop. Someone here suggested this method and it made all the difference in the world: When you catch him doing something bad, grab his neck and gently push it down a bit while hissing at him. Sounds ridiculous, but it works - I guess this is how Mama Cats discipline their kittens. I've done this with both my boys - Bobby learned the first time and Mi after two or three times. I felt bad doing it when they ran off and hid afterwards, but it's worth it. Just ignore them for a bit afterwards and soon they'll come up looking to make friends again.

    Best of luck!

  4. You're welcome. Hopefully it'll work as well with Marzipan as it did with Bob and Milo. The hardest thing is to not feel bad when you're doing it! :)
