I'm looking at beds on Ikea and Wal-mart (Mainly to get an idea of what we would be looking for) and I notice there's a lot of "box spring" mattresses. Is this the kind of mattress where you have the box base, then the mattress on top and the box has legs? Or is it something different. From the images I'm seeing on the websites there doesn't seem to be a box and a mattress, but a single "box spring" mattress.
Any suggestions on box spring vs a slat bed?

Hi Airy,I'm not too familiar with a slat bed. With the box spring you need a bed frame(cheap, about $20),then the box spring, then a mattress on top. the mattress can be quite frilly(pillowtop, firm, etc) or quite simple. With the beds I've bought,I get a level or two up from the cheapest mattress so it has some padding and it's fine.

Cheers Buttercup. I just stumbled accross a description of a box spring. In NZ you pretty much can't buy the box spring without the mattress and vice versa. I've seen way more slat beds here than box.
How much do you think we would be paying for a queen bed. We're looking cheap and i'm keeping my eye out on craigslist. -
Have you considered getting a futon instead of a traditional bed set? Generally, futons are cheaper and they can double as extra seating if needed. Here are some photos of futons: http://images.google.com/images?q=futon&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi

Ok, slat beds and frames which are normally the ones from IKEA have usually just a mattress, the beds from Walmart would be a frame, with boxspring (support system for the mattress basically) and the mattress which can be as said above quite frilly (pillow-top and the like, plus anywhere from 15" to 24" deep which require watching out which sheets you buy). I would watch craigs list and freestyle.org along with yard sales (yard sales I have seen the average of $100 for the whole bed and usually in good condition)...freestyle is stuff being given away for free, and don't know much about the average cost on craigs list.

I never have gotten an approval from freestyle, just started getting the emails that everyone puts out there.

Airy, you might want to consider looking @ overstock.com for a bedframe and/or mattress set, usually decently priced and shipping is normally $2.95 no matter what size.

I don't know if this still holds true for IKEA but it use to be that their beds were European measurements so that the only place you could buy linens was IKEA. They may have changed that, but it's worth checking into before you decide where to buy. I'm holding the twin sized sofa bed couches I mentioned before until you get here and can decide if you want them or not. We have some other stuff too: small kitchen table with drop leaves, big desk, a bookcase (I think). Most of the stuff is headed for Goodwill so whatever you take, you have to find it a new home when you go back to NZ.

CBM,you are so kind to hold onto these things. Airy and I had been looking for a drop leaf table on the Ikea and Target website and couldn't find one. I told her that drop leaf would be great for a small apartment. She will be checking in here again tomorrow.

Oops, mother and daughter check the TDK at the same time. Daughter is faster with her reply. Huh, it's an age thing. :-)

See if there's a "Cost Plus World Market" in your area( www.worldmarket.com ). We were almost exclusively shopping IKEA for our new home, but then noticed that World Market has furniture we like for less. Not only that, but they have the coolest bath, wine, and food departments! You won't have to be homesick if you shop there for the stuff you loved back home!
Here's a list of stores in Cali. Don't know if any are close to you, but it's a start. They also are offering free shipping on web orders of $50 or more. Can't hurt to check it out!

Oh GK, I love World Market!!
I wish I wasn't so far away from California Airy so I could help you out in some way .Posted 3 years ago by cricketsmama #

I would avoid the futon--uncomfortable to sit on and just as bad as a bed.
