  1. I think all top athletes have to acknowledge that there is an element of luck (good and bad) in all their results, and should retain their humility.
It doesn't matter how hard you train or how hard you try in a competition it's always possible for something to go wrong. Each one should always be grateful for the luck that helped them win.

  3. OK - I had to go and find a current picture of the guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Spitz

The main thing I remember about Mark Spitz competing in the '72 olympics was that one of the guys in our little group of friends sort of looked like him. This guy was dating my roommate at the time, and everytime that Mark Spitz was due to compete, this guy would just "happen" to show up so he could watch on TV. (I am ashamed to admit that a year or so later, I started dating this same guy (the roommate was long gone), and we were together for nearly 5 years. I still have nightmares where I've somehow ended up married to him or something! Ack!)

  4. In Special Circumstances the Olympics should have a medal for dead last but finished.

    This track event

And the Jamaican Bobsleders at Calgary 1988 carrying their broken sled accross the finish have lessons that I fear the great Spitz will never learn.

  5. Thanks, Rubia, never ever would have recognized him! ail, I remember that race and also remember standing up weeping and clspping at the same time. For some reason, his dad especially impressed me. I remember dad fighting his way out of the stands to get to his son's side. I suppose today with security being what it is they would never have let him onto the track.

  6. Ya wanna hear some scoop on another Texan who is exactly like this????

Get ready...are you sure you're ready? It's Lance Armstrong. I say this from personal experience, it's not even second hand. Waaaay disappointing.

On the otherhand, a-hole or not, Lance raises millions for a great cause. Mark Spitz needs a media handler, a muzzle and a smack from his mother...not necessarily in that order.
