  1. CBM, even if one is vegetarian or eats meat raised without growth hormones or antibiotics, fat cells in the human body produce hormones. I suspect that once the body goes over a certain level/percentage of fat cells (possibly a range), then metabolism starts a loop of dysfunction that's increasingly difficult to change.

I tend to think that being overweight is a symptom of other problems. Metabolism is complex. It appears that we are well adapted to survive famine, but much less well adapted to a post-industrial lifestyle of ample food and minimal exercise. Other complicating factors such as growth hormones in meat, or high-fructose corn syrup in many foods, undoubtedly are unhelpful in bringing one's metabolism back into proper function and general balance.

  2. This has been interesting reading! In nursing school we had to take nutrition, and in my practice I have had many issues with patients due to weight and how that affects their general condition. Unfortunately, in America everyone kind of wants a quick fix. Now there's even talk of an "exercise pill". But, as Annecetera has said, there are many factors that affect being overweight.

All my life I never had to give one thought to what I ate because I was always underweight. Then I passed a...err.... time in my life when all of a sudden, 20 lbs appeared that pushed me overweight that had never been there before. And, sadly it is true with women that weight gained in more "mature" years is very, very hard to get rid of. But I finally discovered the key - I went back to the gym and have been religious in going for three years now. And when I go, I work my b - - - off. And, the 20 lbs disappeared! But it's not easy. Every day when my alarm goes off at 5:00 am I have a little curse word or two to say to that $^%$@^$%&^ clock.

I am also hypothyroid but that's not going to beat me. I love to cook and I do that every day, and love to entertain. But, I watch my portions like a hawk.

Just my thoughts. The thing that absolutely still kills me, as a nurse, is seeing obese children and the life style that they are being set up to lead.

  3. It has been proven that overweight people eat far less than their skinny counterparts. Right now I am in a weight-loss medication research study, and I still find it hard to lose--a lot has to do with the hormones I am taking, but without them I can't sleep, and I'd rather be chunky and happy than thin and sleep-deprived.

  4. Gatakitty, also interesting what you had to say about this. I was not popular or even well-tolerated in school or neighborhood...I had one best friend, thank God! If not for her--also a misfit--I'd have been SOL. I was constantly hounded because I was *too* skinny, couldn't hit a softball, wore glasses, had braces, etc. The works.

But I came to UT and BAM! It *rained* friends. That's when I found out for the very first time that some people might, just maybe, like me for my smart mouth and devilish pranks. Heaven!

OMG CJ is sitting on my lap!!! She never, ever sits on my lap!!!

  5. SM, I SO know what you mean about the hormones. I can't take them because, due to family history, I am very high risk for cancer. I don't think that I've slept in 8 years! Usually I sleep maybe two to three hours a night. It's horrible! Then, I read a study where insomniacs are prone to weight gain. Great!!!! Menopause is not for sissies......
