  1. The auto shop kittens, Otto and Ellis, have their day at the 'spa' today. Plus Tom, the feral, as long as I can get him trapped. Here's hoping that everything today goes uneventfully!

Will check back in later; gotta run!

  11. Well, Otto and Ellis got through their day at the 'spa' okay. Tom refused to be trapped this morning, so no spa for him today. If he gets trapped next Thursday, I'll take him in then.

Otto and Ellis are at home recuperating. They were the last kitties neutered today, and were still unconscious when I brought them home around 6 pm.

Late tonight, around 10:30 pm, they both ate a couple teaspoons of dry food, but they're both still so wobbly that I put them back in their carriers to sleep tonight. I was worried about one or the other of them tripping and falling into the water dish. In the morning, after a few more hours of metabolism, they'll probably be much better in terms of navigating.

Tigerlilly, you'd asked how their wobbly behavior was going. They're likely going to be wobbly for life, though (before anesthesia this morning) it seems better than when they arrived at Casa Cetera. When they arrived, they probably had dehydration and nutrition issues which were exacerbating their condition. Now that those are eliminated, it looks like Otto has a somewhat mild case of ataxia, and Ellis has a mild-to-moderate case. Still no firm diagnosis as to exactly what's causing it; later next week I may be able to find out more, since I found out the S&N clinic no longer tests for feline leukemia.

The good news is that Otto, upon coming out of his carrier, made straight for me (more or less). The bad news is that Ellis has taken a few steps backwards in terms of socialization; I'm pretty sure I'll be working with yogurt for at least another week or so with them. Poor Ellis must have thought we were all out to get him today & tonight! That, combined with the discomfort... well, I can understand his point of view.

Take care, y'all, and have a great evening! I'm going to bed; it's been a busy (read exhausting) day.

  13. Ann the patience you show and love you give will bring him around.

  14. I hope so. He needs a GREAT home, and the chances of that increase tremendously if he becomes more trusting.

  15. He has the best teacher. You know cat behavior inside and out. If there is a person that can coax him out of his shell it is you. You know he is scared and traumatized right now. He will blossom under your care.

  16. I have time, and that's an advantage. I figure a lot of things are a lot better options than when they first came to me. If they hadn't been able to reach me, the next call would have been Animal Control. I know they'd have been put down before the end of the day.

So things are a lot better than that, and I only have to go back to the first couple photos of Ellis to see how far along he's come. I think I just need to set him up for continued successful behavior modification, despite this setback.

I have time... when it comes to things like cats or my yard (trees), I have all the time in the world to work toward improvement.

  17. The good news is that Otto and Ellis are back to themselves this morning! Otto is seeking attention, Ellis is not running and hiding when I come by the doorway, and they both show normal appetite, thirst, and toilet habits. Yay! Maybe it won't be as difficult to regain Ellis' trust as I thought last night.

They're even playing with toys and with one another! Woo hoo! Maybe yesterday will fade away and seem like nothing more than a bad dream to them (until the next time they pick up the odors of a vet clinic).
