I get the feeling you thought KK and I were joking about the wetas. Well, we were, that is the Giant Weta and not normally found in and around the house. The ones we get are a smaller version, the biggest I've faced was maybe about 2" in length and a much smaller body. They can't bite but will nibble/suck but you won't ever get close enough to let them do that. They are ugly but harmless.

OK it is offical; I am not going to New Zealand! I am sure I will miss out on lots of terrific things and great people but I cannot get past a bug that is bigger than my hand!!

The one picture reminds me of a Jerusalem Cricket. For those who don't know what a Jerusalem Cricket is, here is a picture of me holding one in my hand:

I haven't seen one for months, having said that and with Mr MS working out of town I expect to be seeing them again. Murphy's Law will kick in, so I guess I'll brush the dust off the long handled BBQ tongs in preparation for evicting any Weta that I do find. I pruned the grape vines hesitantly last week because that is where I normally find them, but nothing.

Now, see, I like wetas. They can't fly, they can only jump. I admit I squeal if I stick my hand in the letterbox and bring the mail out with a weta on it (or when I, for some reason, sat on the verandah chair at night and a weta jumped on my knee) but if I find one in the house, I have to rescue it, and one used to live in the hole in my bathroom ceiling. They are ugly, as KK says, but they don't do anything mean or eat anything inappropriate in the garden. I do find dead ones (courtesy of Libby) round the place occasionally and I feel quite sad and guilty. People, we have no snakes, only one venomous spider (that is so rare you'll never see it and its bite can't kill you anyway), no venomous insects, no predators (the only native NZ land mammal is a tiny bat) apart from household pets, rats and stoats and people, all introduced. We are a land of birds and fascinating (smallish, non-harmful) reptiles and harmless insects. COME ON OVER! Unless you like thrusting your hand in hedges on a regular basis, you'll probably have to work pretty darn hard to even spot a weta! As for the giant weta, you'll probably have to get a govt permit and take a boat trip to an offshore island to get anywhere near one of those...!

jcat, god love you...I feel guilty about killing spiders but not for long. I have such a fear of them.
You have a good heart.Posted 3 years ago by cricketsmama #

jcat I try so hard to love all God's creatures but the crawly ones make me run out of the room. I loved the Lord of the Rings movies that were filmed in NZ; the scenery was amazing. Every single person I have ever met from NZ has been most interesing and kind - maybe one day I will forget I ever saw the giant weta, but I doubt it - I will try.

Frostynkobismom, believe me, I have lived here, on and off, for *ahem* (a lot of) years and I have never seen a giant weta (apart from in photos or on telly) and never expect to. Please try. We would love to see you here. Peter Jackson's country mansion (used to be an old farmhouse) is about 15 minutes down the road from me, and his favourite restaurant to take Hollywood stars to is in a lovely nearby country town. It's worth the wetas!

Weta's are a rareish sight in NZ. In fact NZ is one of the safest countries on the planet. No snakes, no major poisonous spiders (maybe one) and very few diseases (I think meningitis is the worst). I'm going to miss my safe home, being in Brazil I'm seeing some weird creatures that freak me out. Weta's are nothing :)

When MrKK moved to NZ from the USA 22 years ago a friend and I convinced him that wets were the size of cats and ate small birds - he believed us!
