I rescue the wetas even though they scare me, I put them outside in the garden away from any areas I would work in.

*holds up the Jerusalem Cricket as an example of a Potato Bug (also known as Child of the Earth)...

winces as the bug bites her while trying to find a way to escape... looks down at the insect thinking about how some people still think the Child of the Earth is poisonous... gets up to return the interesting looking creature to the outdoors where it belongs*

*GIANT SHUDDER!!!!!* Eeeeeeewwwwwwwww! That website almost did me in! I am a major wimp when it comes to bugs of ANY kind! Especially big ones! Here in the UK, we are coming up on the time of year when giant "house" spiders tend to come into the house. Aaarrrggghhh! Fortunately, Tikka tends to keep them under control!
Thanks jcat for clarifying the issue of wetas and other creepy, scary and dangerouse creatures! I am very glad to hear that there aren't any in NZ! I really want to go there someday!

Actually, the one I was holding when the picture was taken bit hard enough to break the skin and draw blood!
Those insects have some pretty strong jaws -- they have to considering that they dig underground and eat roots.
If you want to read the story and understand why I was holding the thing in my hand, here is the link:
