Cat With Cerebellar Hypoplasia - Video

Charley seems to be pretty happy!
Here's another video, this of Otto and Ellis playing; it's the first time they've had a box to play with! (The vet and I believe they also have cerebellar hypoplasia.)

Such sweet kitties all! I would love to have a cat like Charley or Otto or Ellis - they seem like fun playful pets.

I'm looking for homes for Otto and Ellis, you know...
And yes, SM, I'm sure that many kittens who enter shelters with this condition are euthanized immediately. It's hard enough to find homes for able-bodied cats and kittens that the ones with birth defects or other abnormalities usually have a much smaller chance of being adopted, let alone being adopted quickly.
I an completely certain that if my friend hadn't called me when she did, Otto and Ellis would have been picked up by Animal Control, and they'd have been euthanized by the end of the day. Instead, they're being given a chance to find a loving home that will welcome them, in spite of their clumsiness.
(Cats that are strays or ferals don't usually get picked up with cerebellar hypoplasia; very few of them probably survive to adulthood, given that it's a serious impairment when it comes to obtaining food and avoiding cars & fights.)

Charley seems to have a pretty extreme case. Otis and Ellis act more like my daughter's cat with cerebellar hypoplasia. Hope is a happy and otherwise healthy cat. Cats with cerebellar hypoplasia just don't even know there's anything the matter with them.

BC, I'm pretty sure that Otto and Ellis have CH. I still need to get them to the vet to test for FIV and FeLV, but regardless... all their symptoms and circumstances seem to line up pretty closely for typical CH. And given that the condition is highly variable, depending upon how much cerebellar damage exists, it makes sense that some cats manifest more pronounced symptoms (like Charley) rather than somewhat milder symptoms (like Otto and Ellis).
And CBM, you're absolutely right! These cats have no idea there's anything at all wrong with them. Otto and Ellis play just like other kittens; it's just that they're clumsier on landing, most of the time. And they rely heavily on their claws for climbing. Ellis also tends to walk with a bit of a swaybacked stance; Otto, much less so.
But even today, they've both surprised me with the height and distance of their jumping; it's improving. They're much less likely to land in such a way as to go sprawling afterward.
Best of all, they're both consistently coming to me for affection and petting! (YAY!!! Major, major milestone!!!)

Thanks, JCat! They're much, much happier and healthier than when they arrived. They're also much more mobile and well-coordinated; when Ellis arrived, he could hardly straighten his back legs at all; his typical posture was almost a fetal position, except he also wouldn't straighten his front legs. (He spent a lot of time sitting with his belly and chest on the ground, legs under him, his head stretched out, and his ears flattened sideways when he'd see me.)
I'm hoping, in my heart of hearts, that their condition continues to slowly improve until they reach maturity. If that's the case, they could end up with almost normal mobility, at least in some ways.

I have seen this video of Charlie earlier.
I think it's an excellent piece of work, it shows love and compassion and it made me change. It changed the reaction words 'brain damage' woke in me. Now I can feel love and sympathy without defense and anxiety which were earlier intertwined in them.
I truly hope Otto and Ellis will get an excellent home together.

Thanks, Miu! I'm hoping they do, too.
(I'm holding my breath... waiting to hear back from a friend of mine.)

I met a couple of beautiful cats with the affliction at a foster home once. They were the most loving ,adorable & playful cats I'd ever met. They had no idea they had a disability. They just loved to be loved.
So glad anncetera that Otto & Ellis will enjoy a happy life,Thanks to you. Great job you did saving them!

I, too had a CH kitty many years ago. Hers manifested itself in lack of balance. When she sat down, she made sure she was leaning against something - a doorframe, my leg, etc. She was a beautiful, loving tuxie, and the sweetest, most loving cat I've ever been owned by. She was most comfortable when held because she felt secure then. She didn't know there was anything wrong. She thought everyone was like her! What was her name, you ask? Stagger Lee!!

Hi all!
I just had to add my 2 cents, as I recently adopted a CH kitten..Buster is about 5 months old now, and I would say he's moderate, comparing him to the Charlie video (I would think Charlie mildly afflicted) At first, he couldn't string more than 2 steps together without either falling sideways, or going end-over-head in a somersault...he also had difficulty maintaining balance at his food and water bowls; and although he always makes it to the litter box, he pees and poos on his side,(and always falls into his own mess when he tries to cover it up!) However, he has made great great progress in the 3 months we've had him; he maintains his balance by spreading his legs far apart, so now eats and drinks on his own with no problem; he either walks in a high-stepping fashion, or walks almost like you would imagine a dinosaur would, with his back legs and tail going side to side. He has great determination, and seems to resent it if you try to help him get where he's going; he'd rather do it himself! He's really got a tremendous little spirit; these CH cats have a disability very similar to human palsy; mainly it comes down to an issue of balance, and they learn to compensate for their weaknesses as they get older. Spread the word to potential adopters about these kitties; so often they are left to languish in a shelter, when what they really need is some room to move around and learn to compensate for their limitations. Buster is truly a wonderful addition to our family, and we're so happy we made the decision to make him ours! -
Sullis, what a lovely, positive story - Buster sounds like a right little character!! Welcome to TDK, always nice to have 2 cents from newbies - stick around, have a chat in the cafe or on the nightshift, this is a great group of people for cat advice, cat stories, general support and good old fashioned fun!!

Thank you, Sullis! And thank you for sharing your story of Buster; he sure sounds like a sweet kitty. I'm hoping I can get Otto and Ellis adopted together, and the sooner, the better (now that they have a clean bill of health).

Well, 2BP, Otto and Ellis are still mostly kittens. They're growing fast, though! They're starting to look more like small cats than large kittens.

Sullis, is there any chance you can use a photo of Buster as your gravatar?

Sure! Click on 'view your profile,' and then click on either EDIT or the highlighted link that says 'Edit this information.'
Under your profile, there's a link to the Gravatar website. You'll need to sign up for a free account there, making sure to use the same email address as you used in your TDK profile.
The Gravatar website does a fairly good job at explaining how to upload photos to their site. Within a few minutes or so of uploading there, you might want to hit F5 when you're back on TDK, or log out of TDK, and then log back in. (The new photo should show up as your avatar.)
