  1. It got down to 37 degrees last night here in the Blue Ridge mountains. Today it's 55, sunny, windy, and colorful leaves are floating through the air. My girlfriend from Lake Mary, FL is visiting, so we pulled on hooded sweatshirts and thick socks and hiked a short distance along the Appalachian Trail....it was incredibly uplifting.

Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. Giant pumpkins, haystacks, and corn stalks decorate all the storefronts and cafes, as well as the grounds of the courthouse square. Warm spiced apple cider fragrances the air in the banks and library, and a steaming cup of it warms the soul. The Fall Fair is hopping at the fairgrounds, and people have come from afar for the famous yearly Sorghum Festival at the old fort.

How's the weather in your neck of the woods?

  2. A very wet and cold Spring so far Jo. Sick of wearing my winter clothes. Trees have blossomed and lambs have appeared but blossoms have blown away and lambs are regretting their decision to be born I think!

  3. We, too are feeling the nip of the approaching winter. The highs are only in the upper 80's since yesterday, and forecasted to remain so on through the weekend. My son, "Bear" even came to the front door to leave for school this morning wearing his thick, heavy coat (true)!

Ahh, yes, winter in coastal Texas is approaching! I'm not sure when it hits this year; the elementary schools and churches haven't announced the dates for their Children's Chirstmas programs yet. Whenever the kids have to be in their costumes after dark, that's when our 36 hours of winter will be.

  4. I think Autumn is wishful thinking here in the Dallas/Ft Worth TX area.

  5. Do you not have 4 seasons there, Bobbi?

  6. I guess there won't be much swimming during that 36 hours, will there, Ginny?

  7. Naw-w-w. The season ended in July.

  8. Here in N. TX we have summer and winter. Maybe a couple of days of spring and autumn - that's it.

  10. KapitiKats...know what you mean...our winter is long here in the mountains and true spring doesn't come until late May. By then, I've had it with the layers of clothes, too.

Dorie...does your sponsor pay double if you walk in your underwear?

  11. Autumn is my favorite time of year also, Jo. I love the cooler weather, that wonderful clean smell after the rain and the opportunity to bundle up and snuggle with my kitties. I also look forward to all the soups and hot cocoa too. It was cooler here last night with 50 degrees. Temperatures in the daytime are around 60.

No my sponsors are paying me because they feel guilty there not walking, Yes I played the I'm walking by myself card!! actually there will be about 20 of us walking this year, Last year there was only 15 of us out of 177 employees! But I can't make them walk but I can get them to sponsor me! :)

  13. Jo - Your description of the autumnal weather and all the activities and decorations and stuff make me feel so nostalgic! While it is autumn here, it doesn't really feel all that different from this past summer (we had such cold and wet summer!) But what I really miss is all the stuff that goes on in the autumn in the US - especially on the East Coast (and probably in the midwest, etc. as well), but what I remember is my childhood in the suburbs of NYC. I miss the pumpkins, the corn, the scarecrow decorations, Halloween - all of it. There always seemed to be something special in the air in the fall. They don't have that kind of tradition over here. While Halloween seems to be becoming more popular in the time I've been here, it is still not the big holiday that it is in the US. It was always one of my favourite holidays, and I do miss that. Ah well, at least I will get to spend Thanksgiving with my mom and family - that will be really nice!

  14. Jo -

I'm always a little envious of your weather in Blairsville, even tho you are only about 40 minutes north of Ellijay. I console myself by thinking that at least my power bills are lower!

After spending 33 years in the heat of Miami, I relish the seasons up here, and we are almost into my favorite time of year - from the first killing frost until the dogwoods are in bloom. I love being able to see the contours of the land after the leaves are all gone, and I love all of the Fall colors. In Miami, everything was GREEN all of the time. And SNOW!!! What a remarkable thing is snow! We don't seem to get as much snow as when I first came here 30 yearss ago, but it still fascinates me to see it falling. The biggest surprise was that it is basically silent. I had no idea!

  15. It's dropped 10 - 15 degrees overnight... highs in the lower to mid 70's, low's in the mid 40's. I'll probably be turning the heat on at night soon (it's 68 in the house now).

  16. We had the first snow last night! This one is not going to stay, the weather report promises plus degrees for the next week. But it has been a beautiful day, the sun is shining and you can see red, yellow and orange leaves on trees and on snowdrifts.

  17. Snow!!! It seems so early to be having snow, but I had a look at a map, and I see that the southernmost bit of Finland is just about level with the northernmost bit of Scotland, and I believe that they were talking about the possibility of snow in Scotland last week. In what part of Finland do you live?

Posted 4 years ago by Rubia in CA, 4/28 #

  18. Rubia: In Central Finland, in Jyväskylä. It's pretty normal weather up here. (I don't know if I should smile on that or frown - Hawaii, some day I'll come...)

  21. Here in Houston we are just glad that it isn't 90 anymore! We are relishing in the time we can finally turn off our air conditioners in our house and cars. Of course, that means the building where I work is always freezing!

  22. yes!!!!! please!!!!!!

  23. Isn't it interesting to see how different all our worlds look right now? From cooling down in Northern California, to heat and humidity in Texas, to the approaching spring in NZ, to the colorful autumn of the mountains, and the snow in Finland and Scotland?

I thought about this the other day...how we post what we feel, but so rarely what we see. Guess I'm a visual person!

Don't stop....let's hear from some others...

How's the weather in your neck of the woods?

Posted 4 years ago by Jo in Blairsville #

  24. Liz I'm in Houston, it's still too hot for me!!! My air conditioner is still running (it runs all year). :)

Posted 4 years ago by HuddysMama #

  25. Over here (in the Southwest) it is cool in the mornings, you need a light jacket. By 10:00 AM it's up to the mid 70's, and by 4:00 PM it's in the low 80's. (Monday morning it was down to 38, nice and cool.) Very mild, very beautiful.

  26. Hmmm its 6:19 MST, here in Tucson, AZ its about 55 degrees outside with anticipation or expectation of being 90-95 degrees today, with the temps going to 85 deg this weekend. I too run my a/c yearround both in the house and car, if I get chilly at night (only home 2 nights a week, working midshift all the time) I just put on sweats or something non-constricting. I do miss the different seasons, ok the seasons as Southern California would have (where I grew up) lol. And good morning one and all, hope that this Friday is good for all of you >^..^<

  27. Here in Michigan the weather has finally swung to where it should be. Last weekend the tempurature was close to 90 degrees; today we will only be in the low 50's. We have not had any snow yet, but on the radio this morning they were saying that a year ago we had 2" of snow on this date, and just south of here they got 8"! We had an unusually hot and dry summer this year.

The fall colors are just coming into peak now. Where I live there are mostly maple and oak trees - the maples always put on the best show. I love to walk in the woods with the leaves crunching underfoot, and the smell of people's wood-burning fires in the air. I also sleep much better when the air is colder. The only downside is poor Nora - she was yelling at me this morning to open the windows for her, but it was in the lower 40's so it just wasn't going to happen. She is quite upset.

  28. *sighs*

I miss the seasons so badly. Here it's either hot or cold, and we don't get any cold weather until January. By April it's already hot again. Whine Whine Whine blah blah blah boo hoo hoo

Posted 4 years ago by HuddysMama #

  29. N&N's mom...what a beautiful description...I could visualize everything....we have Japanese maples here in the Blue Ridge -- also show stoppers! And yes, I too love the crunch underfoot of the leaves...and of the icy snow which comes later.

Janet -- I feel the same way about snow. The silence of it is ethereal. And because things shut down here when it's snowing, the world becomes soft, still and silent except for the occasional dog barking in the far distance. I'm always torn between wanting to be out in the snow, or curled up inside under an afghan with a cup of coffee and a good book.........I catered a lunch into your friend Cheryl's office in Ellijay last year on a cold winter day. When I left Blairsville to make the 45 minute drive, it was overcast. When I came out of Cheryl's medical office, it was snowing so hard, only one lane was kept open in each direction along 515, because the road crews couldn't scrape it fast enough. I worried whether I'd get back and drove at a snail's pace, but I made it.
