  1. As some of you know I live on a bad corner on a busy road! Last night at around 1:45 am. we were woken by another bad accident in front of the house! My Daughter and I did our normal run. I run to the road and she runs and gets the phone, I yell up what we need Police, ambulance, firetrucks and tow trucks! So I run outside she's at the door 2 cars collided and have the road blocked as one car is sideways across the road and the other truck is 1/2 way up my front hill! The guy in the truck jumps out of his truck and almost falls down as he has a huge cut on his leg! I yell up to my daughter we need the works she makes the 911 call. I then yell to her to bring me a towel so I can apply it to the gash on the guys leg! I help the young man(27 year old) to the steps in front of my house and daughter brings out the towel and I put it over the gash, as this happens cars are coming around the corner.(The other driver is fine, He lost control going to fast and hit the guardrail across the street and spun into the truck) My other neighbor and I stand on opposite sides of the turn and direct the traffic to turn around . The police arrive so we both go to our own houses, I go to the steps where my daughter is with the young man who is hurt, He's o.k. just shook up and needs to have stitches put in his leg. The fire department shows up, Fire truck and ambulance, the ambulance comes over to where we are. The EMS guy gets out gloves, gauze pads and rolls of gauze and wraps the leg, leaving the packaging on my steps. The fire truck puts speedy dry down because both vehicles are leaking fluids on the road. The tow trucks arrive to remove the cars. They put them on the flatbeds and left all the smaller car parts laying in the road and across my hill. So my daughter goes to the police officer who's going to clean this up! The officer and another pull there cars up to the mess with there lights going look at it and then leave... Now I have medical waste sitting on my steps and car parts laying on my hill. The officer told my daughter that the tow company is responsible for the clean up. So we get gloves and clean up the medical waste because it's on my steps and theirs kids in these houses! We then went in and called the tow company. who said that the tow truck would come back and clean up the mess after they drop the car off... Well they never came back! I have listened to cars running over car parts all morning. So I called my local news and told them about all of this they are looking into it. this is not the first time this mess has been left and I can't deal with it anymore!
So, Again I am exhausted no sleep for Dorie since 1:45 am. I did doze but the cars hitting the glass and parts on the road are making a racket. I pray something comes from me calling the news!
Sorry this is so long but I gotta vent!!
    Peace
    Dorie

  2. Sorry to hear that Dorie. I hope you can take a long nap now.

  3. Oh Dorie, oh no. Obviously, the traffic department needs to do something to make that corner safer. You are a hero for helping that young man, I am not very good at the sight of blood and wounds and things.I hope he comes back and thanks you, and the cops too, they are all VERY lucky you were there and that you have such presence of mind. No wonder you're upset. I hope the news get on the traffic department's back about it!

  4. I'm hoping by around 11ish some of the car parts will be removed and I'll be able to sleep for an hour or 2!

  5. You would think they would be worried about causing another accident with debris left on the road on a bad corner, or at least flat tyres!

I am first aide certified because of where I live! The turn is known as Dead mans curve and has been for years! I have seen to many deaths on this curve!
There's not much more they can do to fix it! I just wish that the drivers would heed the warnings! There's signs there's blinking lights speed limits 25mph and they still go 60 mph! It's funny that anyone who comes around the corner that knows us goes 25 mph because they know it's a bad turn, But we live in between 2 popular bar scenes and that's when the accidents happen. Last night neither driver was drunk the road was wet as we had gotten Hanna and the one guy took the turn too fast!

  7. Maybe if they put up a REALLY big sign saying 'Dead Man's Curve' coming up and the number of accidents that have been there so far... But maybe some drivers would think it was still a joke.

Where accidents have happened on our roads, the families quite often put up a little white cross by the roadside. They used to get removed by the cops because they said they were a distraction to drivers -- but they seem to be leaving them there now. I know whenever I see one of those sad little white crosses, I get a shiver and slow down.

  8. How horrible Dorie, Thank goodness for you and your daughter, but that doesn't help you and your lack of sleep. Try to nap today at least. ((hugs))

Posted 3 years ago by cricketsmama #

  9. There's no place to put up the crosses unless they go on my hill! And I really don't want them there! I have asked the town to put up a black spot sign that lets drivers know it is a dangerous curve and people have died here! But I've gotten no where! Maybe the news crew will ask for it!

  10. I do want to put up a sign that says another lovely job done by the towing companies name!!

Posted 3 years ago by 4 kits staff #

  11. I hope you get to nap later on, Dorie. That is a huge public service you and your daughter do, I hope your town appreciates you!

  12. Sorry to hear about your night Dorie. I pray that the news crew will cover this story thoroughly and finally you can get some peace! It seems to be just another case of "it's not my job" and frankly Dorie I am sick of it too. There is no excuse for the medical team to leave bio-hazzardous material behind. If there is blood it is bio-hazzardous. You have no idea what blood borne pathogen that man could have. My thoughts are with you Dorie--please let us know the outcome of this incident.

  13. Dorie...what a horrific night! You're a braver woman than I. Jeff was saying that maybe what you need on that road..since it IS posted 25 MPH...Is a couple of healthy speed bumps. They are used on the main road coming into our town and are VERY effective in teaching drivers that 25 mph means 25 mph. Hope you're able to rest up today...I know you have a hell of a week ahead of you. {{{Dorie}}}

  14. That is a great idea Karen. Here is a link to other examples cities have used to calm traffic. I don't know what the best design would be, but something should be done to dramatically reduce accidents on your road, Dorie! http://www.sfmta.com/cms/ocalm/13567.html

We have speed bumps and raised islands on some of our roads where people tend to speed. The raised islands force cars to navigate around their edges making it impossible to get up to dangerous speeds. The New York State Department of Transportation's website describes a Safety and Mobility improvement project in 2006 due to dangers on your street (NY 26A) between Old Coach Rd and Ridgeway. https://www.nysdot.gov/portal/page/portal/news/press-releases/2006/200663 They should have continued it on past you!

Dorie, would your neighbors be willing to join with you to demand that the New York State Department of Transportation modify your intersection? (In your spare time. Ha!) I bet they keep statistics about the number of accidents and deaths for particular intersections. That might grab the attention of the powers that be and the media. Your story of all the horrific things you've seen over the years would help the media put a human face to these tragedies. The fact that you've made the effort to get first aid training just to deal with this mess is astonishing. I am in awe of you, my friend!!

  15. Dorie! What a night! I agree with karen and kw that speed bumps or islands would be a great start in slowing down that traffic. We have a dead man's curve on one of our highways, too. It is an L turn, and they have side barricades (well used from the looks of them) and those warning bumps as you approach. Sometimes, those warning bumps are enough to wake folks up and get the message across.
Do try to get a nap, and good luck in trying to get something officially done about this.
I also agree with sm about the biohazardous materials left behind. I can't believe they did that!
Good luck lil sis. My thoughts are with you.

  16. Dorie, sorry to hear about your yucky night. Actually it is the tow company's responsibility to clean up the debri left by the accident, its the EMS personnel's responsibility to clean up the medical waste and I would definately contact them about that, with it being a medical hazard. Could you and your neighbors petition the city/county to put in speed bumps or speed tables thru the area to basically force cars to slow down....all the signs and flashers in the world basically do nothing if the driver(s) are not paying attention but the speed bumps/tables get ones attention. You were smart to go to the news, we have an investigative news channel here that if you contact them they will check into almost anything of concern to the community. Write a letter to the editor also for however many newspapers there are in the area.

  18. Dorie, that's outrageous!!! Out of the goodness of your hearts you and your daughter provide the initial help and then get dumped on - good for you for going to the press, sometimes a little public humiliation goes a long way. Hope you get a better night's sleep tonight - it's not beeen the best of week's has it? {{hugs}}

  19. It sounds like two stop signs would do the trick. If one were put about 250 feet up on the approaching side of each leg of the turn, cars wouldn't be going fast enough to lose control. Of course, there's no guarantee that someone wouldn't run the stop, but that would result in a pretty expensive ticket.

I know cities will put up stop signs in the middle of roads that don't have cross streets because my city did it. We have a pretty steep hill that empties into a major highway. People would get going too fast and either not be able to stop at the bottom, or worse still, not be able to negotiate the last turn before the bottom. After a truck took out the garages and front rooms of 3 houses one morning, the homeowners sued the city because of it. Because so many accidents had already happened there and so many letters and petitions had been sent to the city about it, the judge ordered the city to put a stop sign partway up the hill. A few people thought it was a stupid place for a stop and ran it, but the resulting $375 fine makes that an unattractive ticket.

  20. Dorie, when the story hits the airwaves, post the clip. It's amazing what results 15 minutes of fame can achieve.

  21. Ok the news crew never called back... But we called the tow company and I talked with the owner. He personally came and cleaned up most of the car parts. As for the medical waste I called a friend that is a fireman(He tried to become commissioner last year but lost) He came over and took the bag with the medical waste and said he would handle it!
As for the turn It is an "L" in the road it's 25A and a major road on the north shore they were going to put the strips down but several neighbors fought it as for the noise it makes, they won. There's no way to put a stop sign here as I said it is a major road!
    thanks all for the suggestions
    I love you all
    Peace
    Dorie

  22. Oh yea KW The section of the road was botched up and they had to remove part of the division as during rush hour the emergency vehicles couldn't get through!! Another lovely plan screwed up also where they were able to put the dividers in has become an eye sore as the weeds have taken over!

Posted 3 years ago by 4 kits staff #

  23. Wow, Dorie. That is unbelievable that the Dept. of Transportation messed up the design for the safety improvement near you!

I'm glad you were able to get the medical waste properly disposed of and that you don't have to listen to car parts being hit out on the road. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you get a full night's sleep tonight!

  24. I used to live on LI so I know where you are. From what I remember if a certain number of accidents happen in the same spot something is done about the problem. I think 25A is a state road, so get in touch with your area state legislators. What TV station did you call? All 3 used to have help divisions (& ON YOUR SIDE, etc). Strange no one covered the story (Roseanne Scamardella, where are you?)

I called news 12 the local station. My cousin works there, That's why I called them. As for the other stations, They really don't do anything for Long Island!

also last night we had another crash someone hit the guard rail and bounced off and left(This happens all the time, We call it bumper rails!) that was at 2:30 am. I was able to go right back to sleep after it so I got a half way decent night sleep.
    Have a great day all!
    Peace

  26. What type of response did you get from the local station Dorie. Do let us know. It doesn't make sense that for such a notorious 'black spot' that they rely on just warning signs. I can well understand you not wanting to have a white cross on your bank. They appear at nearly all fatal accident sites in NZ, at first the department controlling roads in NZ removed them but family and friends of the departed insisted that the crosses remain as a warning for drivers using the roads. I must say it does make you think when you pass by a small white cross, even more so when there are several in one spot.
