Do your cats talk to one another??????

(16 posts)
  1. I had read somewhere that cats communicate amongst themselves by body language and scent, and leave the "meows" for the humans! But I can attest that my youngest, Buster, is always vocalizing for 1 of the other cats to come out and play!

  2. Are you kidding? Gem and Nora verbally abuse each other all the time! ;)

Seriously, all of my cats have verbally talked to each other. They do seem to communicate by body language quite often too.

  3. Hahaha...I THOUGHT so! My older 2 fairly quiet with each other, with the exception of "announcing" when they're gonna jump onto or off something..but the newest one constantly screeches for one of the other cats to come and play!

  4. My kitties are pretty silent. An audible meow is usually a demand for me to serve more and better food or to entertain them. They don't need voice for communicating between themselves unless there is a bigger squabble over who has the right to cut a line or something.

  5. Tansey's always got a lot to say (lol). She makes this sound in her throat that sounds like a little, melodious growl. We call it "Vrring" and she does it all the time. Touch her when she's not looking "VRRR!"

    Call her name "vrr??"

    Want something to EAT? "VRRRR!!!!"

She vrrrs at Hermes a lot, and he's now vocalizing back. Sometimes he just sits and howls for her if he can't see her.

Sometimes she meows in two tones, sometimes closes her mouth between them.

  6. Blackbeard runs around the house making a trilling noise, he speaks like this to us and his sisters. BooBoo meows to both us and the other 2 kitties, and she meows alot..a whole lot!!! she pretty much doesn't stop unless she is asleep. Betty hardly makes a peep. Very tiny mews on very rare occasions..

  7. Funny, isn't it? I guess it just goes to show that cats have very distinct personalities..My Linus very rarely makes a sound, whereas Shadow (or Princess Peeps, as I call her!) always talks to me..Our newest, Buster, talks to everybody and eveything that will listen!

  8. Well, I knew up front that Nora had a big mouth. She belonged to my sister-in-law. My SIL and my neice both talk a LOT and very fast so maybe Nora felt like she had to keep up! She doesn't talk as much now as she used to but she still seems to feel the need to comment on everything.

  9. Oh my, yes they do talk to each other. I had a cat pass away in April, my baby Cane Cane and Momma Kitty passed July of last year. After Cane passed away he would roll around on the floor playing with "someone" and making noises. It was the spot him and Momma kitty always played at. I relized Momma Kitty was still here with him letting him know it was ok and she was still around. I miss my babies but they are still in my heart. I remember every move they made and sound that come out of their tiny little mouths. Just remember to listen when they are trying to tell you something. They can even let you know when something is wrong with the other one. My Frisk is very vocal and Fluff well he's a bit more on the quiet side. Calico, well now she's kind of quiet and don't say much at all. I love their different personalities. They are my babies and they are adorable.

  10. Mine talk to each other...it is usually at 6:00 in the morning when they think they should hold their kitty meeting. It sounds like a bunch of little ewoks making plans to see what kind of trouble they can get into for the day!

  11. Oh so cute!!! I told my husband that the cats hold their meetings at 5am so we won't interfere (he was LESS than impressed!) But I swear it's true...

  12. Why is it we think it is cute waking us early in the mornings..husbands seem to find it annoying!!! What are they disturbing their beauty sleep? I think my cats do it to pay my hubby back for snoring during the night...lol.

  13. Oh, ILMC, if you only knew how true that was!
It doesn't really ever bother me; I figure it's some kind of cat convocation they have when they think the humans are asleep! Just adds to their mystery, in my opinion! (don't even think of asking my husband what he thinks...hahahaha)

  14. I've heard cats talk to each other before, but their vocalizations sound different than the ones they direct to humans. Their meows to each other are more chirpy and trilling, like on that YouTube video of The Talking Cats.

  15. I love to hear them talk together, even the colony kits, there are a couple who come up and talk to me the whole time I am up there feeding them.

  16. I love talking cats. When I had more than one they would announce their arrival or walk around calling the other. Then I'd hear the thud from some other room and the other cat would appear in answer. I also got them to "answer" my questions such as do you want meat or fish? They knew the difference over time because I would say the words a certain way and would repeat them as I fed them a particular food. I never had the finicky eater problem.
