  1. I came home a couple weekends ago from a trip to the Metroplex to find that my cats had made messes all over the house — window sills, hallways, etc. My boyfriend and I later decided that they must have wanted to avoid the flea problem that has cropped up in recent weeks — they avoid walking on the carpet at all costs.

And so we vacuumed repeatedly last week, have used some insect sprays (that claimed to be safe to use around pets), and generally tried to clean things up.

And we had to move the litter box to the kitchen, which is just gross. We tried to move it back to the bathroom, but the cats do not want to walk in the carpeted hallway.

In fact, they still don't want to walk on the carpet at all.

Grumpy uses the litterbox, and I think Snake does some times (although he's also using some soil that my boyfriend is using for his botany hobby).

Spook, to the best of my knowledge, has not. Instead, she's used the window sill a few times, and the big cat/small dog crate in the living room.

We think she's been traumatized by the fleas, as she has also had skin problems due to some allergy.

I have no idea what to do now. So advice would be quite welcome.

  2. Try Feliway plug in diffusers to calm them, they will help combat the stress. You could also try coaxing them back onto the carpet with some of their favourite treats? I'm sure others will come along with better advise, but I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of the diffusers.

  3. You may not find this to be much of a solution, but I know that there are flexible plastic carpet protectors sold in rolls that you could put down the length of the hallway. MCW's idea of using Feliway is a great idea. I remember someone recommending a kitty litter called Cat Attract that entices kitties to use their litterboxes. Are there still fleas around in the carpet or on your cats? Addressing that would be important. The only other idea that comes to mind is taking them to the vet to see if they have UTIs. Good luck. This must have been quite a homecoming!!
