  1. Why this is NOT all over the news is beyond me. I worked near Atlanta today. On my way to work, I needed gas; the station right before the highway (Chevron) was empty with plastic bags over the pump handles. I thought that was odd, and got to work on fumes figuring I would go to a gas station by the mall after. Well...ALL of the gas stations were out of gas. I drove one exit towards home, which has 9 or 10 gas stations, and they were all out of gas. Seeing my gas was now below E, I was practically in tears. Went back out on the highway, there were cars out of gas all over the sides of the road. Decided to head in the direction of home and see how far I could make it. As I came through Marietta, to my disbelief there was a gas station with plastic bags on all of the pumps except two, and to my further disbelief, someone was standing there pumping gas. I pulled in just as someone pulled away from the other one and was able to buy gas. The rest of the way home, I passed many more closed gas stations, and one Racetrack that had 2 pumps open and lines snaked down the street. I came home and Googled and....nothing? Why isn't the news all over this?

  2. Good grief! Why indeed! Was the price about the same? I wonder about supplies in other states? I'm not hearing anything here either. What do they expect folks to do Monday about getting to work! Glad you were able to find some afterall but I know the feeling!

  3. The price was $3.89, about the same as before the gas dried up. I had put off filling my tank since I was hoping that gas prices might go down a little soon. Before the hurricane situation, I paid as low as $3.37.

  4. my goodness Aunty CW! That's not good! I hope it is only temp and caused by Ike something fix able!

i think we are headed towards a depression I hate to say it!

  5. LV, supposedly it is due to the hurricanes shutting the pipelines. Gas has also run out in the Nashville area.

  6. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Makes me worry either way!

  7. It is odd that it's not on the news, they are talking about periodic runs on gas that they say makes them run out but something is definitely fishy.

  8. What a terrible thing to have happen..I'm sorry CW...I can't fathom why there's nothing on the news about this. That's too strange! I wonder if you call the local authorities if they could tell you anything at all.

  9. Actually it has been on CNN and Fox News late at night, they show the southeast and along the Gulf coast as being out the soonest :( But they did not say that all the gas stations would be out of fuel.

  10. BC, that article about shortages is dated April 21, 2006.

  11. Oops,must check dates. Sorry.

  12. Using an advanced search I found quite a few local reports in Southern Georgia of a fuel shortage, but oddly enough nothing national. Good luck CW.

    Much more recent ;)

  14. I told my hubby about this and he called the NY Times and told them--they were aware of shortage in Tennessee, but not in Atlanta. They are planning to send someone down there to investigate as well. Hope something comes of it and the situation is resolved!

  15. Hmmmmmm, that's scary. I'm going to make sure I keep my car as full of gas as I can for now. I actually experienced quite a few gas stations in my area that were out of gas last week. Wonder if they're keeping this hush-hush to avoid panic and more trouble for the economy?

Yikes, I'm going to make sure my car is kept filled up for the time being. I had trouble myself finding gas last week in my area. I wonder if they are keeping this hush-hush to not start a panic and cause more trouble for the economy?

  16. CW, the same thing happened in Ormond Beach on US 1 last Sat., the day Ike hit Houston. Bob decided he better fill up my tank and when he went back both stations were out of gas and he went up US 1 to the Racetrack near I95 and they had a few pumps open and he filled me up. Since then, things seem back to normal. We figured they really hadn't run out of gas that fast or something was really weird. Comments??

  17. Huh, Bobby pushed a button, my post disappeared and then it came back!

  18. Something is very strange here...though there is no gas anywhere, all you see on the news is that the Braves are playing the Mets downtown, the fair runs through this weekend, blah blah blah...HELLO! No gas, don't leave your house!

  19. There was a brief mention in the news here about Nashville and how the Texas refineries were effecting it. Nothing else. We have Chevron refinery here and I guess because we have gas, we do not care. If it doesn't effect the wealthy, they do not care??

  20. Wow... unbelievable... Maybe one or two stations being out would just be considered a bad coincidence and bad planning on their part... but the entire city of Atlanta and surrounding 'burbs??? That's just crazy... (And I know Atlanta, I had friends that used to live in Marietta and have been there a few times, so I know how many gas stations are along the highway... that's just surreal)

And another reason that I don't let my tank get below a half-tank... ever...
    You just *never* know...

  21. Unbelievably, The Atlanta Journal Constitution has responded not by reporting on this issue, but by setting up a BLOG so that readers can discuss it!

  22. This post says it all:

    By no gas in Buckhead

    September 21, 2008 1:50 PM | Link to this

I drove up and down Piedmont and Peachtree last night and found no stations with gas. Finally found some gas at a Shell station at the corner of 14th and Spring, but it was doling out the gas in $10 increments. I bought $20, which was about a third of a tank. It’ll get me to work Monday and maybe Tuesday. After that I can’t go to work anymore this week unless the stations get some gas. What I don’t understand is why the media isn’t covering this as the major crisis that it is for the metro Atlanta area? When will there be more gas? Will there be gas by Tuesday? Do the cabs have gas? Are they running? I need the media to ask these questions and tell me the answers. I actually sent a message to the ajc.com editors last night begging them for a story, and all they did was initiate this blog. What are the reporters doing? There can’t be a more important story today in Georgia. Did they fire all the reporters in the last downsizing?

Posted 3 years ago by Catwoman #

  23. But those stories are from last week--the 15th and 12th respectively. There has been silence on the news that there is no gas to be had in metro Atlanta as of 6 pm Saturday September 20th.

Posted 3 years ago by Catwoman #

  24. and isn't CNN based in Atlanta? Wouldn't you think they'd be all over this?

Posted 3 years ago by linda #

  25. SMM, the third story is about the only one that was being circulated yesterday about gas in Tennessee, but even that article wrongly states:

"The phenomenon seemed to be isolated to the Nashville area, he said."

Posted 3 years ago by Catwoman #

  26. Nothing on CNN...though CNN reports that a girl got sick from tainted milk in Hong Cong, and George Michael was arrested for drugs!

Thank God CNN keeps me updated on what is relevant to my life!

    Found this on WSB...

  27. Another article I found below the story you posted CW. Maybe there's an attempt to prevent panic. This wreaks cover-up don't you think. I guess they can't stop all the news people from talking.

    Oh...wait...this one is from 2005..sorry.

  28. Karen, that article is from August 31 2005--after Katrina.
