  1. Hi, I'm a new member in need of encouragement and advice! If you're interested you can see my introduction in the Introductions section.

Five days ago, my brother gave me a kitten, I think about 2 weeks old, who had been separated from its mother on the patch of land surrounding my brother's workplace, where a lot of feral cats live. Since he was not the first person to find the kitten, he isn't sure if (she, I think) was orphaned, maybe by the wind storm, or found while the mother was in the process of moving the litter. The first person who found her, for some reason, put her in a box by a dumpster.

I've had a bit of experience raising kittens too young to be separated from their mother; I raised my 2 male cats from the age of about 2 weeks, but that was a long time ago. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the situation, but I am starting to get worried because the kitten hasn't pooped yet.

She eats well from a bottle, every 3 hours or so except during the night. She has a total 3-4 Tablespoons of KMR a day. She also sleeps well but isn't lethargic. In fact she cries very loudly for her milk upon waking and tries to scale the sides of the box. I wipe her little kitty bottom with a warm washcloth after each feeding, but still only pee so far. Her belly also seems very large and round.

She also worries me a bit with how much she cries, which is just about constantly when she's not sleeping, eating, or sucking on my fingers. I don't remember my boys either sucking on my fingers or crying so much. Could this be because they had each other, and she is alone? Even when I am holding her, she cries continuously unless she's sucking on my fingers.

Thanks for your help in advance.

  2. Skitties, your kitten must see a vet immediately. She's in grave danger, from what I understand. She intestinal passage may be immobilized, blocked or twisted. Time is of the essence. She cries so much because she's in pain. Vet now! I think you've done all you can from a home remedy standpoint. Please keep us posted!!!

  3. I have to agree with Lisaylau. Since you know how to stimulate her, and she pees for you, but cries all the time, I would guess she's either blocked or has another problem that needs professional attention. 5 days is too long to go without going.

Keep us posted; we get really worried when a kitten is sick and there's no follow-up posts.

  4. A vet visit is definitely called for. There could be something seriously wrong. She could have an unusually large load of worms, too (sometimes indicated by a big belly).

When you're stimulating the entire genital area with a warm, damp washcloth, be sure to include the anus. It often helps to make a circular motion that encompasses the entire area. Try for about 10-15 seconds, gently, and then reverse direction for another 10-15 seconds.

It seems like the kitten's not taking in much food, total, for an entire day. That tells me that there might be something wrong, but it also tells me she might be crying for more food. She could also be crying just because, at that age, kittens are in constant contact with their mama and littermates. Do what you can to keep her warm & comfortable & snuggled up to something warm & fuzzy (a small stuffed animal often works just fine). Or, you can keep her in closer contact with you, if reassurance is all she needs.

Good luck at the vet's office!

  5. If you have an alarm clock put it in the folds of a towel or stuffed animal. To a kitten it sounds similar to a mothers heartbeat and she will get some comfort from it.

  6. Hi, and thanks, everyone.

The kitten finally pooped this morning, but I was a bit worried about the appearance of the poo. It was firm but in 3 long strips, maybe 3/4 of an inch each. It was a sort of a bright orange color. I will try to take her to the vet today or tomorrow.

Anncetera, I am giving the amount of KMR recommended on the package: 2 T. per 4 oz. of body weight daily. Kitten was around 6 1/2 ounces by a mailing scale when I got her and is now around 7 1/2 ounces. She would definitely eat more; she seems quite annoyed when the bottle is empty. But I read that overfeeding is a bit more dangerous than underfeeding. Should I let her have more?

She has a stuffed animal that she sleeps next to and a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. I wish I could hold her more, like I did with my boy cats when they were tiny, but I have a very demanding 15-month old daughter and a 7-year old son now!

    Thanks again.

  10. Nicole, you do have your hands full with your own little ones. Maybe you could figure out some way to carry the kitten when she's sleeping. I raised a tiny kitten some time ago and I use to tuck her into my cleavage. It helped that I have lots of cleavage and the kitten was very small. If that won't work for you, maybe you could adapt a baby snuggly carrier to hold the kitten up high on your chest.

  11. Nicole,

Thanks for the update! Yay for poop!! You are right that underfeeding the kitten a little is way better than overfeeding. Most of the time, when you overfeed, kitten will get diarrhea. As long as you are feeding her on time and she sleeps most of the day, she's doing fine. If she starts getting restless and crying for the bottle, then you may give her a little more. When my Lucy Belle was that small, she tends to feed more than the recommended amount too and I have to keep an eye on her poop all the time. But it's good to know that she is defecating solids so that's a really good sign.

You are a great mommy and doing everything right. Don't worry. It's fine to be concern so if there is anything at all that we can help you with, just let us know.

Have you gotten a name for her yet? And pics would be nice.

  12. Thanks for updating us Nicole,Yay for poop!

  13. Nicole, glad to hear that she finally pooped! Even better that it wasn't diarrhea. I wouldn't worry too much about the color; as long as it's in the dark-mustard-yellow to brown range, it's probably fine. (Really icky colors like green or nearly black are another story entirely.)

As long as you're feeding very regularly, the amounts are okay; just seems a little low compared with kittens I've raised. If she wants a little more, I'd go ahead, as long as her pee & poop situation remain normal. (Then again, she may just be wanting the contact and attention that comes with being fed.)

  14. Another update: she pooped again just a bit ago. It was still a color I wasn't too sure about, like a dark pumpkin orange, but that makes me feel better, Anncetera. I also found a mucousy-bloody-looking spot on her bedding. It was miniscule but enough to worry me, along with her huge round belly, so I made a vet appointment for tomorrow.

  15. 5K, I'm glad you made the vet appointment; that's exactly the sort of symptom that should not be ignored.

  16. Oh, and if you're really worried about the color of the feces, save some in a plastic bag & take it in with you tomorrow.
