  1. I made a serious mistake at work (filed the wrong version of a pleading with the court) and got fired today. Part of me hopes my boss just spoke out of temper and didn't mean it (unlikely), part of me is frantically wondering what I'm going to do, and part of me wants to curl up and die. :(

  3. Oh Bella!!! I am so sorry. Everyone makes mistakes. Are you sure your boss meant it? If so, I hope you get another job soon. I am at a loss of what to say. I will keep you in my prayers. ((Bellantara))

  4. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he meant it. It sucks. I'm good at what I do, and to lose my job over something this stupid---I've been crying since I left work.

  6. {{{hugs}}}

    It will be OK, bellantara. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's not the end of the world, and then go from there.

    You might have legal recourse if you've been a good, dependable employee and just made one mistake.

  7. Is there an appeal process that you can use?

  9. I'm so sorry!

    I agree with C in Waco... if this was the first time... well, we are all human. It happens.

  10. Boss owns the firm; don't think I have any recourse.

  11. I'm so sorry, Bellantara!! Is your boss the highest person on the chain of command? Is there anyone at your office that might intercede for you? Can the error be fixed by filing an amended pleading?? If this is an isolated mistake I can't imagine that your boss would want to go to the trouble of advertising, interviewing, hiring and training a replacement. Give him a day or so to cool off and think about contacting him to see if he will reconsider.

  14. Oh, Bella! I am so sorry. I send prayers and wishes hoping you would get your job back or a new and better job. {{{{{HUGS}}}}} Is the mistake you made really that bad? I really hope your boss reconsiders.

  15. (((Bellantara))) I'm so sorry. Would you be able to talk to your boss about what happened? Maybe after a few days he will cool down and rehire you. We are here for you with hugs and kittens are here for cuddles.

  16. KW, boss is the principal of the firm; I was the senior paralegal. An amended pleading is being filed this afternoon, but I was told to pack my stuff and get out of the office. Five years I've worked there, and this is the outcome. :(

    Thanks for the prayers and hugs and kitties, guys.

  17. Oh no Bella! :( I wish there was something I could do to help!! If there is anything I can do like help you look on webpages for a new job or help with anything just let me know. ((hug))

  18. 5 years, and it's a mistake that can be fixed??? I would think he will reconsider once everything has settled...If not can surely fine a more reasonable boss..

  19. I just know from personal experience as a manager that, in order to keep from being sued, we have to document problems and show a pattern of behavior that just won't change before we can fire anyone. I don't know if we are more careful than the average business, though.

    Do you belong to a professional organization or a union that can offer advice?

    Posted 1 year ago by Cats4Cats #

  20. That is pretty heartless. If you have a good track record there with a professional work ethic, competence at what you do (you must given that you are a senior paralegal) and (up to now) a good working relationship with your boss, I don't undertand this over-reaction to a fixable error. Offer to let him take the cost of doing the amended pleading out of your paycheck. Has he never made a mistake? Sheesh!

  21. Unfortunately, no. I'm just out in the cold and have to start over.

    Posted 1 year ago by Bellantara #

  22. It can be hard to believe but something better awaits you.

    Posted 1 year ago by caroline #

  23. There's no cost involved in fixing the mistake, other than billable time. It's just a very high profile national case we're getting involved in and thanks to my mistake, we look like fools.

  24. Hon, today things look very dark...take a long hot bath, cuddle with your kitties...know that you have many friends and whatever the final outcome, you are an awesome individual who doesn't deserve to be treated like this..

    Posted 1 year ago by 2bpurring #

  25. Bellantara, this doesn't sound right to me. If the problem is fixable then I would think that their firing you over one mistake is over-reacting. I whole heartedly agree with KW. You have been with him for five years. That should show for something. If you don't hear from your boss within a day or two, I would check with the labor board or obtain some legal counsel. This could be a wrongful termination issue.

  26. You might still want to give your boss a day or so to cool off. If he doesn't want you back, then I would talk to an attorney who specializes in employment law to see what your options might be. If you were fired for good cause as opposed to laid off, you might not be able to draw unemployment which would just stink. See if you have any paperwork from when you were hired and a copy of any personnel policy/procedure manual. Maybe boss would agree to this being considered a layoff to allow you to draw unemployment. {{{hugs}}}

  27. {{{Bella}}} I am so sorry for you pain today. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Always remember that when a door closes, a window opens!!

  28. I'm kinda curious to know how a pleading got filed without boss' signature on it. Did he not look at what he was signing. The buck stops with the attorney!

  29. I echo what 2B said. Very well put, 2B. {{Bellantara}}

  30. I just can't think right now. Thanks again for the love and encouragement; I may be back later.
