  1. After 43 years as the Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, announcer Larry Munson has announced his retirement, effective immediately. :(

I knew this day had to come--I've known it for years. Munson (always "Munson" to the Bulldawg nation, or, among each other, just "Larry" as if he were the only Larry in the world) is 86 years old and has well earned a rest.

Still, it can't mean good things about Munson's health. It took a downturn earlier this year, but he had rallied enough to call the first two home games of the season (he retired from Away trips last year).

I had the opportunity to meet the Voice a few times while helping out at the games. I will definitely blog on that as soon as I can. For right now, my tears have to wait until my daily duties picking up the Bear (Ladybug is home sick today) and fixing dinner are done. First chance I get, though, the tears are really gonna flow.

  2. Oh, Gatakitty..I felt the same when we lost Bobby Murcer...a true gentleman to the end...
Wow...43 years for Mr Munson!! i can only imagine the things he's seen...
I hope it's not a health issue, and that it's just time for him to take a break..at 86 he's entitled!
Wishing Mr Munson a healthy happy retirement.,,

  3. Where has gone the horse? Where has gone the man? Where has gone the giver of treasure?
Where has gone the feasting place? Where be the hall-joys?
Alas bright cup! Alas the armoured warrior!
Alas the Prince's glory! How the time has passed away,
grown dark under night-cover, as though it never were.

  4. Ginny, no one can ever duplicate or truly replace Munson and his unique style, but I sincerely hope he sticks around long enough to enjoy retirement. I also hope that the Dawg fans will give his replacement a chance to fit in.

  5. Following a depressing birthday, I'd just as soon not think about all of that, Instinct. But I'll tell you - the part about "how the time has passed away", boy is that ever right :-(

  6. The man that was the voice of the Clovis Wildcat Band for the past 49 years died the week after the first game. At the first game--which would have been his 50th year he asked his son to sub for him and he ended up at the hospital. He died the following week. He was 70. It is never easy to lose anyone that has meant something to so many. Mr. Munson will be sorely missed and remember his voice as he begins a new phase in his life.

  7. "Get the picture..." Georgia fans turning on their TVs to watch televised games, turning off the sound, and turning on the radio to hear Larry Munson call the game.

KYKAT, seeing as the people who have been broadcasting the away games helped with broadcasts in years past by giving commentary and are already familiar voices, I'm sure they'll do fine.

  9. For those of you who don't understand what it's all about, here.

This is my life here, from the mention of Andy Johnson, who was QB in the early 70's and went on to play for the Patriots, to the parade of UGAs at the end.

We shall never hear his like again. There will be announcers, there will be good announcers, but there will never be another Larry Munson. When they made him, they broke the mold.
