Question about Diesel

  1. Lately, either Diesel or my roommate's cat Reba has been using other things (bathtub, beanbag chair, cat tunnel, cat tube) as a litter box instead of the actual litter box. Most of the time it's when the litter box hasn't been cleaned in a couple of days, but now I've noticed twice that Diesel's rear has been a little bloody. Not really sure what that's all about or if any of this is connected, or if this behavior is from both cats or what. I am thinking I should take Diesel to the vet just to check him out. Thoughts? Thanks! :)

  2. From what I've learned from other TDKers... Diesel and/or Reba won't be wanting to use the litter box if it's yucky so a daily clean is a good idea. Also for two cats, at least two litterboxes, if not three, makes for happy litterbox-users. Also, another reason for not using the litterbox is when the cat has a UTI and associates the litterbox with pain, so tries to avoid it, so yes, sounds like the vet for poor old Diesel, with his bloody behind, would be a very good idea! Let us know how it goes and headbonks to Diesel and Reba! Good luck!

  3. A vet visit is definitely in order. Also, definitely daily scooping of the litter boxes... I'd have at least 2 litterboxes, since you have 2 cats.

Good luck with Diesel! Hope the problem is easily fixed.

  4. Thanks JCAT! We cleaned the box this afternoon, scrubbed it really well too :) But I think the messes I found today were from the morning sometime. We are going to set up another litter box in a different room also, so hopefully that helps too... But I'm going to take Diesel in just in case... I won't be able to handle it if he gets really sick because I didn't take him to the vet in time... *sigh*

  5. And Anncetera is the main TDKer I learned it from.... *Waves to Anncetera* so it's really her you should be thanking!

Hugs for Diesel. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine, once you get him to the vet! Keep us posted!

  6. You're too kind, JC! But once it's understood that cats are often territorial by nature (to a greater or lesser degree), and that the cat litter box is a noteworthy bit of territory... it all makes more sense.

Plus, healthy cats don't generally emit blood from the genital area (unless it's a female in heat). That would be a pretty sure sign there's something wrong, IMO, right up there with blood in the mouth, nose, eyes, or ears.

  7. Sounds like a UTI to me, classic symptons are using anything but the littertray (Eric is prone to these and squats over the bath plughole), plus the bloodied area...good luck at the vets, hope he just needs some antibiotics.

  8. Yep. I would think a vet visit in order...I've found that if they start using things other than the litterbox, they're trying to tell you something's amiss

  9. Diesel and I just got back from the vet. They tested for a UTI (will have results tomorrow), but the vet thinks it probably is just a behavioral thing, the rear tissue swelling didn't seem to be a big concern to him... He advised me to get the Feliway Diffuser. Also, Diesel weighs 14.8 lbs, LOL. Vet said "he's getting there" hehe. :) Hope everyone is having a good day!

  10. That's reassuring DM, but keep an eye on him just in case. I can vouch for Feliway being good at calming stressy cats, the plug in diffusers are particularly good.

  11. awww Diesel...let us know what the vet does say after the results for the UTI. Hopefully it is a behavioral thing and can be corrected. I have never used Feliway but I hear it's wonderful.

  15. Ok, Diesel has crystals in his urine, so he is now on prescription cat food :( ugh. He's worth every penny though! Hopefully this helps.. they gave me enough for a month and want to see him back when its gone. Thanks everyone for your concern! :)

  16. Poor Diesel! Be a nice boy and eat your chow! You'll get better in no time. *scritches and headbonks*

  17. Hi Diesel's mom,

Did the vet explain what that means (crystals in urine)? Also, how do cats get this?

    Just curious :o)

  18. SJ, no the vet didn't really explain much... but he is now on Hill's Science Diet s/d for a month and then c/d for another month. They did a urinalysis to check for a UTI and came back that he didn't have one, but had "some" crystals. :) Sorry!
