Very cute, but who in the world would cut the whiskers???? Am I right? Aren't they awfully short?

My beautiful Claudia (who went over the rainbow bridge 4 years ago used to eat corn gusto like that! Now my little sweetie eats angel food cake with equal energy!)

  2. Okay now that is so cute! Kitten reminds me of my Sylvester. What I am concerned about is who cuts off their cats whiskers? That is kind of inhumane to cut them like that as cats use them for vibrations, etc. I think it must feel strange to that kitten...kind of like cutting off one's finger nails a bit on the short side.

  3. That was too darn cute! And yes Caddycat, they look short, but I just can't imagine a cat person ever cutting them, not on purpose.

  4. Maybe that's just the way her whiskers grew in?? Or maybe she's too young to have a full grown set? But did you see the length of her eyelashes? They are longer than her whiskers!!!!!!

  5. You are right. The whiskers have been cut. My kids went through a stage when they thought the fuzz butts would look cool with their whiskers cut. It's a kid thing to do. Doesn't hurt the kits, but just makes it hard for them to sense the spaces that their heads (and bodies) can fit through.

  6. When I was in college, I came home to find that my roommate had cute one side of my beloved Spanky's whiskers. I was furious with her and she couldn't understand why. I do admit *bowing head in shame* that I cut the other side because he looked so funny with one side long and the other side short.

  7. Now that I think about it, it wasn't the whiskers, but what my family calls their 'antennas'. Is there a correct name for them? Hey, we also called their mouths 'smiles' because it always looks like cats are smiling!

  8. Kiwee eats melons, but I have just given her pieces, not a whole slice. This kittens has a look on his face like he just won the lottery!

  9. An acquaintance of mine (I would never call him a friend) once cut the whiskers on my cat. I was livid. It didn't seem to hurt her, but boy, talk about an effective way to make someone hate you.

  10. This was an adorable video! The kitten was eating melon like a people!
I don't like the whisker thing any more than the rest of you, but maybe the girls got the kitten like that... Just a thought.
I wish I remembered more Ukrainian because I understood some of the words just not enough to understand what they were saying.

  11. FondaHonda, they're called "vibrissae" (plural: whiskers). Singular is "vibrissa." Vibrissae are found on the forehead and between the nose and upper lip, but also further back on the cheek/jaw and along the back of the leg/ankle areas.

They're different from other hairs, in that they're elongated, stiffened, and usually more-or-less independently movable. They appear to be used to very precisely detect objects and motion, even when no light is available to see.
