TDK Roller Rink birthday bash for DJ Pumpkin

(20 posts)
  1. Pumpkin is one year old today; since this is her birthday, she gets to listen to whatever she wants today, and she wants to listen to disco. For the next two hours, DJ Pumpkin will play whatever she hears from classic '70s episodes of Soul Train, one of her favorite TV shows. Anyone who can name the first official disco song and the artist who sang it will get whatever he/she wants from the snack bar today and be Pumpkin's BFF for the day.

  14. Perhaps I ought have clarified things: the first record with a barely recognizable disco rhythm was indeed "Soul Makossa" by Manu Dibango. Some officially put "Rock Your Baby" by George McRae and "Rock the Boat" by the Hues Corporation (both of which were released in 1974) as some of the first disco songs to chart. Bear in mind that, like modern club music, disco was largely DJ-driven until the late '70s, when it became artist- (or, more accurately, producer-) driven; some may also say that the late '70s and early '80s are when the market was heavily saturated with what barely passed as a once-cutting-edge music genre and equally when the music lost its spark.
