Black Cat Legends, Myths, & Facts! 10/09/08

  1. In the Middle Ages, black cats were not very popular because of their association with witchcraft and black magic. Superstitions about black cats, some of them current today, date back to this period. Fisherman’s wives believed keeping a black cat in your home meant your husband would always return from the sea. In the 9th century, King Henry I of Saxony decreed that the fine for killing a cat should be sixty bushels of corn.
There are still people who believe that the black cat is a reincarnation of the devil and regard it as bad luck.

    --------------------------------------

Black cats have been known throughout history for being bad luck. Interestingly, these felines are also known for being harbingers of good fortune as well, depending upon who you ask.

There are many myths about cats. For example, you may have heard the myth that white cats make bad mothers. But by far, more myths, legends, and sayings revolve around cats with black coats than any other.

While the black cat is a coat color rather than a breed, there are domestic feline breeds that are black in color, or have a fair amount of black in their coats.

In fact, the Bombay cat breed, with it's jet black coat, is said to look like a miniature panther. As we know from the big cat fact page, panthers are actually not solid black.

    --------------------------------------

Black Cats have been associated with deities, witches and magic
for centuries. Black cats have been worshipped, condemned,
persecuted, have been thought of as having powers,
as being the omens of bad luck and being also a good
    luck charm.

Part of the "mystery" surrounding the black cat comes
from the traditional interpretation of the color black.

Black is the color of the night, and of "evil." Black
can also be a color of elegance or class (such as a
black-tie only event, and black evening gowns.) Black
can also represent ideas such as power, sexuality,
sophistication, formality, wealth, mystery, fear, evil,
unhappiness, depth, style, sadness, remorse, anger, and
    mourning.

Black can also represent a lack of color or emptiness.
It can also mean sorrow or mourning, in the Christian
tradition of wearing black to funerals. Used by itself,
black can represent bad luck or misfortune. Black also
is the color of black magic.

  2. It's so amazing that a color can be associated with things.
My Bastian was all black and I never thought her to be bad luck, but then again I didn't live in the dark ages either...lol
    Thanks scarver!!!

  3. Black kitties are great!!! (except when your wearing white)..Of course I'm not overly surprised...If people can be prejudice because of skin color, it's no stretch that they would be so because of the color of furr as well...That's why I love TDK...we can love all people and all fur....
    Thanks scarver!!!

  6. I have heard that it is very rare to find a truly all black cat with no white on it at all. This supposedly goes back to those days when all black cats were thought to be witch's familiars, and so they were killed whenever one was found. On the other hand, if the black cat had a bit of white on it, it was spared. So the black cats with a bit of white are the ones whose genes have been passed down over the generations.

  7. Well, lets see here, my Amy is all black and will bewitch anyone she comes in contact with because she is like spun silk. When she is in the light, you can make out brown stripes. Go figure! Right now as you all know, I have Velvet and Spice staying with me. Velvet is all black (ink black as Cheri described her) with one tiny white spot on her chest. Spice is an all black very long haired cat (absolutely georgous!) I haven't had them in the sun light yet to see if any other colors are hiding there but time will tell.

In no way do I find any of them unlucky, as a matter of fact I feel quite blessed to have them in my life and wouldn't want it any other way!

  8. I always worry this time of year...it seems that many people will go out and bring home black cats to become a part of their halloween pranks and/or decorations..then lose interest in them altogether when the celebrations are over. =(

  9. I always worry about that too...My sister is currently fostering a black kitten and I have ask her not to adopt it out before the end of the month just in case...besides, the longer the little guy is there, I think she will keep him...

  10. Locally our ASPCA won't adopt out any cat with black of any kind on it from 9-30 thru 11-1 for fear of someone doing just that. I know during the Halloween season, I'm much more vidulent in making sure all of my kits are safe and out of harms way.

  11. Sarah is all black also. She "hates" the month of October, because she doesn't get to go outside much. Especially during the week of Halloween. I have also learned that many shelters, or agency do not adopt out any black kitties during the month of October. I think that is a very good ideal.
