  1. I found this plea on reddit.com, a social bookmarking site where I spend way too much time, and it's breaking my heart because I am stone broke and can't even send $5 to help. I don't know whether asking this is a violation of TDK rules; I hope not. It's just that these folks have gone so far already to save their kitty, and I'm trying to help them put together the money to bring her home safely. Here's the story, along with the Help Loki Fund website link:
    ...
Thank you guys. The short story is that Loki ate a ton of string which destroyed her insides. Thanks to some amazing doctors and nurses she has survived so far. Unfortunately her intestines are still not functioning.

Loki was rescued when she was a tiny little baby, along with her two sisters. Her mother had died, and the little babies were found by my boyfriend. He taught them to eat, to drink, and basically was and is their mother. She and her sisters are 6 years old now.

We noticed her withdrawing and not eating (she is a very social cat and loves to eat). We took her to the vet and they found that she had string basically cinching her intestines together into a tiny little ball. After a six hour surgery all of the string was removed. They had to cut her stomach open once, intestines 6 times, and repair two lacerations that the string had made.

Since then she has been touch and go. Her pancreas is in very bad shape from the string and the surgery, causing her not to eat which is slowing her recovery. They have taken her off the pain medication, and she was looking okay today - eyes open, purring, looking around. She is in a bad way but still has a 50% chance of making it if they can treat her pancreas and get her intestines processing food.

If we can afford to keep her in the hospital, we have a good chance of bringing her home. We want to do everything we can, but already our credit (every form we could get) is maxed out. We love Loki so much. If we can make it through these next couple of days, we can have our baby home and happy.

  2. The problem with these sites is that one never knows if it is a scam or not. If there was some way to get the vet's contact info so the story could be verified, it would help. It's hard to believe, though, that the vet would have brought the kitty along this far and then just stop treating her without offering the owners some way of paying over time.

We aren't suppose to ask for money for ourselves on TDK, but there have been some other posts that direct website for someone who needs help, the trick is making sure it's a real need and not just someone pulling heartstrings as a scam.

  3. @Cheetahboysmommy - Trust me it's not a scam. She is a real kitty and we're doing our best to save her. It's not that the vets are refusing to help her.. we've maxed out all of our ways to pay.. We have a little left but it's getting tighter and tighter. We are currently working with bellrose animal hospital and NYC Vet specialists in Forrest hills. I'm not one to ask for help, but i need to save my baby.. it's been a week now.. and we just need a little more time to save the little one. If you feel it's a scam.. then i'm sorry you feel that way. But know we are real, loki is real and the problem is real :(

  4. and thank you angelamotorman for reposting this :) it's a huge help. Even if people can only keep loki in their thoughts, give us a prayer.. it's ALL helping :)

  5. I agree with CBM. Trust doesn't get one very far on the internet. 'Trust but verify' as Nixon once said. If there's no way to verify, then there's no cause for one to donate to what might just be another scam.

  6. Perhaps if the vet's information is listed, vet is called to confirm kitty is there, and donations could be sent directly to the vet's office? I agree the internet can be a scary place and full of bad people (not to say that this person is! It's just if there is a more fool proof way of making sure it goes directly to the vet, it may make people feel more comfortable helping)

  7. Buddha can you post the phone number there? I know people have been able to help by sending funds directly to the vet--makes everyone know where their help is going.

  9. I didn't say it was a scam, I said it was necessary to verify to make sure it wasn't a scam. I've called the Bellrose Animal Hospital and Loki is a patient. That was easy.

  10. She is being transferred back to Bellrose tomorrow for further care. She is currently at NYC Vet Specialists for the weekend because it's 24 hour care. During the weekend bellrose is only 12 hour. If you wish to donate directly to the vet feel free. We are just using paypal to have a central source for the donations so we can pay both Bellrose and NYC Vet specialists.

Our two vets at Bellrose have been Dr. Lambert and Dr. Nims. WONDERFUL doctors!

  11. Sorry if I violated the rules. It was late on a Saturday night, and I was so upset about this plea and my inability to give any material assistance that I automatically turned to TDK, the site I routinely refer folks to for advice and comfort. I realized after reading the above comments that I was never worried about the veracity of the folks asking for help, so decided to post some links to show why I wasn't worried.

Here is the original plea for help bringing Loki home. It was posted to the Assistance subreddit, where they have serious tools for sorting out scam from real pleas (see the right sidebar for links to Verification, FAQ, and Flowchart) as well as follow-up and resources):
    http://www.reddit.com/r/Assistance/comments/ji4nv/please_help_save_my_baby_loki_xpost_from_rcats/

And here, on TDK, I've posted a longer explanation of reddit itself, and its exceptionally altruistic community: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/37012?replies=1#post-667355

    Hope you like it.

  12. I don't think it violates the rules. We aren't suppose to fund raise for ourselves but I think it's okay to post links for other causes.

I didn't mean to imply that all internet pleas were scams, and I didn't realize that this one came from a site that actively checks what gets posted. In fact, I'm happy to see that there is a site like reddit where people can be pretty sure they aren't being fleeced.

I did make a small donation and I'll keep a good thought for Loki until we hear she's home.

  15. Thank you everyone! Anything helps.. and i would suggest reddit to anyone. Between Reddit and this site (to which i'm a new member) we have made some nice ground on helping with the vet bills and keeping loki in treatment! Thank you again for posting this here for us.. It means a lot! :) Please keep spreading the word for us.. thank YOU again so much for your donations!

  16. Taco was at NY Vet Specialists (the one on 55th street) for about a week when he was really sick too. He was back and forth between there and another pet hospital as well. They are great and really caring there. I hope they are able to help out Loki.
