Gabriel is sick

(29 posts)
  1. He stopped eating over the weekend. I took him to the vet this morning, and his weight had dropped from 12 pounds at his exam last December to 7 1/2 pounds. The doctor found nothing remarkable on examination, except that he was a little dehydrated. They gave him sub-Q fluids and took a blood sample. The vet said they should have the results of the blood tests tomorrow.

I've been feeding the cats Purina's Healthy Weight formula because the girls need to drop pounds, but I've been giving Gabie extra because I wanted him to maintain his weight, not lose any. I may have to give him something different from the food the girls eat. I'm going to get some canned food and offer him some tonight (the girls will have to get a little, too, of course). The vet suggested that I mix beef baby food into his cat food.

  2. Hope that the sub-Q and the extra food helps Gabriel gain some weight back, if you go the baby food route remember nothing with onions in it.

  9. Gabriel's kidneys are not functioning well. He is going to be hospitalized on IV fluids for several days to try to get them working again. He may also have pancreatitis, and they can't do anything about that. He ate canned food last night and this morning. I'm about to get ready and take him to the vet again.

Gabie is only seven years old. I can't believe this is happening. I don't want to lose my boy.

  11. Gabie is in the hospital now. He will be there until Friday afternoon, at which time they will do another blood draw. The results will be available on Saturday. If the second blood test shows no significant improvement, he will be helped to the Bridge. If it does show improvement, I will administer sub-Q fluids at home to try to maintain the improvement. If he relapses, he will be helped to the Bridge.

Apparently his condition isn't so severe that there's no realistic hope of recovery or so mild that recovery is likely. He's in between, where the doctor can't tell which way the disease process will go.

  13. Healing energies Leeny. My Chloe was diagnosed with CRF several years ago, and has been down for 4.5 to 5 pounds for several months (first drop form 9 to 7; then from 7 to 4.5 pounds). She is eating but not gaining. Her quality of life is still good... not running like she used to but is jumping again onto the bathroom counter. For a while she could not do that. She is only 9. I hope this gives you some encouragement that Gabriel may be OK. :)

  16. When I left Gabie at the hospital yesterday, I told the doctor that, as long as I didn't get any calls from them to notify me of a change in his condition, I would assume that all was well and I wouldn't call them every day to check. I suppose you know how long that lasted.

When I called today, they said he was doing all right. He was receiving his fluids and "even ate a little bit of canned food for breakfast." I'd feel better if I knew how much that little bit was.

  19. Today Gabie "really enjoyed his food and water," is sitting up in the kennel, and enjoyed a conversation with the vet's receptionist. He's still receiving IV fluids.

  25. I just talked to the vet. I thought I was going to be able to bring Gabie home today, but I can't. They want to keep him until they get the results of the blood draw. They're also giving him an antibiotic for the suspected pancreatitis. They said he seems somewhat constipated, and they've been giving him something for that, too. Otherwise, he seems to be doing quite well, eating wet food and in good spirits.

I've also started introducing wet food into the girls' diet at home. I give them half of a 5 1/2 ounce can in the morning and half in the evening, supplemented with three 1/8-cup servings of diet kibble for each of them. I'm not going to give Gabie diet kibble any more, though; something different will go into his dish.

Does anyone who feeds wet food exclusively know how much a cat should get each day? The instructions on the can said how many ounces of food per pound of cat body weight they should get, but I don't have a scale for measuring ounces of food.

  28. I changed Buttons food exclusively to wet food a few months ago and i found it best to stick to the individual small trays and touches as they are always the required amount and they normally suggest 3 pouches or trays a day. Also if he is having any kidney issues make sure the wet food is grain/cereal free and has a low ash content.

Ask your vet about giving your fella D Mannose in his food once a day its an amazing ammo-acid that in boost immune system and flushes and clean the urinary tract making sure there is no blockage for bacteria to build up behind. Its great for the.kidneys as well i have Buttons on it every morning.

  29. Leeny, we serve canned food exclusively (well almost exclusively) and the suggested amounts on the can are often a bit high. From reading on cat forums and my own experience most adult cats tend to eat about 5-6 ounces per day. (The ounces are on the can...tiny ones like fancy feast are usually 3 oz. and more medium sized cans are usually 5-6 oz.) I try to find a food that suggests one 5-6 oz can per day for a 6-10 lb cat. (Not that I follow those amounts exactly, but you are getting more nutrition for the money than a can that suggests 1 1/2 or 2 cans per day for a 6-10 lb cat. Hope that makes sense.)

Also there are good deals to be had online for buying canned cat food in bulk. I've been able to get the big (12.5 oz) cans of Wellness food for much cheaper than buying in the store. Bigger cans can save money. Petfooddirect.com used to be my favorite online pet food store but I recently discovered that doggiefood.com has better prices and free shipping for orders over $50.

I hope Gabriel gets better soon!
