Neutered?

(16 posts)
  1. Both my boys are going to get neutered tomorrow. They are going to a high volume spay/neuter clinic. The clinic didn't give me any pre-surgery instructions. Do i need to take the food and water away for tonight? Or are they okay to eat? Is there anything else i should do for them before the operation?

  2. Yes please take away all food and water at least 8 hours before surgery time. If it's 8am then nothing by mouth after midnight. If they have free roam of the house,it might be better to confine them to a smaller room so you can make sure they don't get anything.

  3. okay, thank you. they have free roam but we'll just empty their food into the bag and put it up so they cant get at it. thank you so much!

  5. May your boys have and easy and uneventful "spa day" as they say here. And may you be calm, too ;)

  6. They had an easy neuter. My fiancee and i even left our college class early to pick them up. :) They're having a hard time NOT licking at them tho. Any suggestions?

  7. Well, you could try explaining to them why they can't lick - it won't mean a thing to them but it's good exercise for your vocal cords, LOL.

Seriously, if they are licking a lot, you'll probably need to put collars on them. But if they are just licking to get the vet smell off them, I wouldn't worry about it. If you just start petting them when they start licking, it will probably be enough to distract them.

You only need to worry if they open the incision, start to get raw or rashy, bleed or seem to be in obvious pain. Usually the incision made for neutering is quite small and should heal in a couple of days. Spaying is more complicated and requires a bigger incision.

  8. Yeah, i job shadowed a vet and have seen both neuters and spays. The spays were the worse. My two are funny tho. They know that when they lick they get yelled at, so now all i have to do is look at them once they start and they'll stop. hehe

  9. Great! Now I dont want to get my kitten spayed..shes going to suffer. Since You shadowed a vet, do they really put the kittens under (asleep). I mean I know I gotta do it, and I dont want her to suffer a "heat". She already acts crazy sometimes now, so I can only imagine if she was in heat.

  10. She's not going to suffer, Pebbles, not if she goes to a good vet and I'm sure she will. Like a human, she will be under anaesthetic while she has the op and she should get pain relief too. Giving birth would hurt too, and it would happen more often...

How would the vets even do it if they didn't put the little one under anaesthetic? Have you ever tried to even bathe a kitty who didn't want to be bathed, lol?

  11. yeah ur right JCat. My kitten just has so much personality and she is so acting sick everttime we get back from vet. The last time we went she knew where she was right when we walked in. She didnt want to come out of her carrier to get weighed or anything. When we got in exam room she tried to put up a fight.. she hissed and crunched down in attack mode like no way I had even see her act before. she knew she was getting a rectal temp nd she dont like that...so the nurse leaves and Pebbles is cool with me petting, kissing, and comforting her....then the vet walks in...she goes right back into that mode..Then I found out we gotta go back in three weeks for f/u cause she needs booster shots for that leukemia that cats get, and her rabies...she is so weak after. I can only imagine how she will be after getting spayed...., and I think they want her to stay over night!!! so not cool with that. She will feel I abodoned her to get tortured....awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...Hey, how come cats hate water, but when Im washing my face or brushing my teeth, she will come and jump up on counter and try to play in the water with her fron paws only.....when I feel the sink, she sometimes steps in with all fours, but thats it...its so cute, like shes doing her morning cleanup...even wet a toothbrush and put it in holder, and she sits there biting it, basically brushing her teeth...the thing that gets me so mad, is she doesnt let me dry her feet, and it never fails, she always has to go in litter box with her paaws all wet, after she has cleaned up her paws so good, and makes a big litter mess. Shes lucky I luv her spoiled butt!

  12. mama, if the vet you go to has one of those scales for dogs to stand on, try bringing in your empty carrier and weighing that and writing the weight on the carrier. Then whenever you bring your kitty in to be weighed, you can just set the whole carrier (with her in it) on the doggy scale and subtract what your carrier weighs. Thats what my dad did and it is really helpful! Then when you get into the exam room you can just open the carrier and let her come out on her own, which would lessen the stress for her a little bit. :)

I dont know why a vet would want the animal to stay overnight after a spay. Unless something happened on the table, or if the animal is old....hmmm...

  13. My Sassy slept for 2 days after being spayed and was back to normal in a week. They used the dissolving sutures on her and I really liked that.

Some cats love water :) Others don't!

Rajah LOVES to go swimming or walk through really deep puddles but he hates - no he detests - the rain. Silly cat!

Most of the cats that I have had spayed or nuetered were already acting like nothing happened a few hours later. There was no slowing them down! A few did decide to throw a self pity party for themselves for a day until the realized how much fun everyone else was having. I have gotten around 50 cats S/N and they were all back to their normal and very active selves within a day or two!

All of the ones that I have gotten done had dissovable stitches as they are all feral or barn cats and there is no taking them back to the vet. The only pain meds they got where right after they were done.

  15. My Tikka was not a happy bunny the evening after her spay, and any attempt to stroke or cuddle her just got her more agitated. But amazingly she was fine the next morning - playing & jumping like normal. She did keep trying to pull at her stitches ( no self desolving ones), but otherwise she was fine. :-)

  16. @Raiye, I kept her in carrier yesterday when getting weighed, but when we got in the room she would not come out for nothing.. then the nurse left that thermometer in her butt for hecka long..she just hates it there.. and now ur scaring me cause maybe overnight does sound very strange. She has a plan through Banfield Pet Hospital which is located inside Petsmart, so Im assuming they are good..maybe I just read the pamphlet wrong :O)
@Furryfriends50..Rajah sounds so cute...its funny how they get their little quirks about certain things. Will he take a bath? I can tell Pebbles doesnt hate water, just seems like she likes to play in it, but I know she will not stand for a bath....Im not so scared to get her spayed now, but I will be checking to make sure she wont be staying overnight!!!1
