Hi everyone. I recently acquired a week and a half old kitten from one of our outside cats. I live in Texas so its been extremely hot. This kitten had 2 siblings and they died from the heat, the mother moved them to a bad spot. Luckily my dad managed to save this one before it died and she recovered fine.

But there are a lot of rattlesnakes about, and with the heat…the mother just seemed to only feed her twice during the day then she’d spend the night with the kitten. Also the area the mother moved her was prime for snakes and possums. She has been inside with me for a day and a half. I already had a bottle and formula ready. The formula is a powder and is hartz brand. I raised 4 other kittens when I was younger, its the same brand of formula so Im pretty sure it will work fine.

The kitten’s pee is nice and clear, she is hydrated fine. She has yet to poop, but Im not too worried about that, right now she is asleep in my lap and her tummy isn’t bloated or firm and hard. Its nice and soft. She took to the bottle very easily and I feed her about every 3 hours. Her behavior is normal. After eating I wipe her down with a damp paper towel, just to clean her a little and wipe her bum. After eating she actually interacts with me and swats at my fingers, since I pet her and love on her after she eats. Then she falls asleep.

I suppose the only concern I have is the pooping issue but she appears perfectly healthy and her stomach isn’t firm or hard, or bloated. Just before she went to bed I put two drops of vegetable oil in the formula before I fed her. She drank what she wanted then was done. Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow she’ll poo a bit. Oh also her eyes are not open but she seems to react to light, and sound, my voice mostly.

    Comments or suggestions anyone? 🙂

Welcome to TDK Moosey and that is wonderful you have taken in the last wee kitten. It sounds like she is doing well for such a young kit with a rough start to life.

Here are some to great sites for handrearing.

Sounds like your doing everything wright 🙂

She a lucky little one! Veg oil is good, i wouldn’t worry about pooping just yet as they need some time to adjust to formula and kitten general only poop once every 2 or 3 days when they are that young. And her eyes should open around the 10 day mark so anytime around now if she is a week and a half approx.

Really the only thing i would change about what your doing is the brand of formula reasons why?

    Exhibit A:

    Exhibit B:

Bad News for Hartz = Good News for Pets

Personally i would NEVER use any Hartz products they are just too dangerous and it is well documented if you can get any other formula i diffenately would!

Also there was a thread start earlier

Thanks! I actually read up on Hartz formula and I heard similar stories. I know it is okay just to sustain them for a few days, thank you for the links though. I used hartz because it was what I had available to me.

Now Im just worried if I switch the formula too soon she’ll get bowel problems. Still as of now her tummy is nice and soft still and she has a good appetite. No change in her behavior. Maybe this is because she had a week and a half with her mom’s milk?

Going to buy KMR milk replacer. My mom went out to the store and is going to buy the powder to mix. I just prefer the powder to the readied milk!

Thanks Jetta, so far she has been doing fine. Its only been 2 days though! Aha, she was healthy when I got her, I just now have to give her KMR milk instead of Hartz.

Off to a good start! Congratulations on the successful rescue, and welcome to TDK land. Have you chosen a name yet?

Thanks Paula! Her name is Maude. It just seems like a fun idea to give cats old lady names. 😀

Hey guys I got my can of KMR powder. I was reading that a few people had issues with the KMR powder because it was rancid when they bought it. I also read a way to tell if it was rancid was by smelling it.

“SMELL YOUR KMR!!! It should always smell really really sweet. Not oily or

slightly rancid. In the last 3 months I have purchased more than 12 containers

of powdered KMR that were rancid. And one 5lb bag that was bad. I went to

PETCO to replace one and opened every container on the shelf and they were ALL

rancid. I had the manager smell them all before leaving the store. PetAg said

the trucks sometimes sit in the heat in the desert during transport and the

warmth turns the formula. Duh, refrigerated trucks maybe??? This is

unacceptable and I have switched to Just Born. I asked them just how many

babies had to get sick or die from rancid formula before they did something

about it. John Q Public that finds a kittens and decides to save it won’t know

that it is not supposed to smell this way. Even my friends who are bottlers

didn’t notice it. I am absolutely paranoid about

this now. SMELL YOUR KMR before you use it.”

My KMR doesn’t really smell oily or chemically, but it smells slightly like cake mix. I am so paranoid now for my baby. ): I haven’t given it too her yet and I think it smells okay, but I don’t know what the rancid kind smells like exactly.

Maude still hasn’t poo’d but I fed her the KMR and she took to it fine. She hasn’t vomited or gotten diarrhea so I’m pretty sure now the KMR is just fine.

Although she hasn’t poo’d yet her tummy is still nice and soft. I burp her after every feeding. And I also wipe her down with a slightly damp paper towel too, which she really seems to enjoy.

My main concern is the pooping. I know its only been 2 days, but until she does go I will be slightly paranoid. Other than my own paranoia, the little kitten is perfectly healthy.

Rancid will be kind of sour and gross. I have always thought hartz had the worst smell.. If you still have hartz you can add it half with hartz and half with kmr. Reduce it by half every day. She will probably be a little backed up. You can dilute it with more water. Keep us updated!

Thanks Chaos. Nope the KMR doesn’t smell gross at all, it almost smells like pancake or cake mix. 🙂

Also I noticed after I feed her she still wants to suck on something, I refuse to let her suck on the bottle after I know she has had enough. I know kittens suck on the nipple for comfort and each time she does this I just pet her and try to keep her comfortable. This is the only time she’ll actually meow, she doesn’t really whine much but she can move around a lot !

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l286/angrypinkmoose/2012-08-19124651.jpg I just wanted to share this picture. This is of Maude just this morning after she had breakfast she fell asleep like this! Her tummy was full of warm formula. :3 Her foot looks blurry because she was twitching in her sleep! Speaking of her tummy, its still nice and soft.

Maude still hasn’t poo’d. 0: This is the 3rd day. I gave her a small dosage of veggie oil, water, mixed with pedialyte from a small syringe. I only used about 3 drops of veggie oil. Maude is still acting normal! Maybe I am just paranoid.

Keep in mind that Maude prolly wasnt getting a whole lot of feeding from her mother, the feedings now maybe filling that void and it can take awhile for it to go through the system. How are you stimulating her? I assume she urinates when you stimulate her just fine? If she doesnt seem to be in any discomfort I am sure she is just fine. June Bug didnt go until day two after bringing her home. What a sweet baby and thank you for the pics!

Thanks for the input Rocky. I actually took Maude out to see her momma today. Surprisingly Salt (the momma) was still producing milk and it seemed like she was almost waiting for me to bring her baby back. I sat out there for a good hour and a half and watched them.

Maude drank from her momma and the momma gave the baby a good bath! With any luck the momma milk will help her bowels.

Well Maude is doing fantastic, I’ve actually got a routine down where she drinks from her mamma, then afterwards if she is still hungry I feed her from the bottle. The momma bathes her and cleans her. Maude’s eyes are fully open and she can hear pretty well. I think she is about 2 weeks old now! She is walking around so good already though!

Her bowel movements are also back to the norm. 🙂
